Looking for herb suppliers?

I am looking for a company or drug store chain in Switzerland that can supply a wide range of dried herbs (krauter in German I think) or tinctures.

I have been to at least 10 pharmacies in different kantons but on the whole their range of dried herbs is small. Fresh herbs I do not really expect to find at all but maybe there is someone who provides seasonal supplies...

By the way, I do not mean mainstream herbs like camille, thyme, verbana etc.; these are relatively easy to find.

I mean the likes of yellow dock (rumex crispus), slippery elm (*), wisthania etc. These are mainstream herbs also but I still have not found a supplier in Switzerland (I know there are some in Germany but I would like to keep it simple and order in CH). This is slightly surprising to me as Switzerland seems very much into natural products. Oh, and if you know a supplier of Asian herbs....

I'm not sure this will help you, but perhaps the site will point you in the right direction...It is a good resource site: krauter.ch

The only place I know of is the 24 hour chemist at Bellevue in Zurich (the one painted green, rather than the one directly on the cross roads).

Not sure if they have the more hard to get stuff, but it is worth a try.

There's a pharmacy near Stauffacher in Zurich (right by the big tram stop there) that specializes in natural remedies. They might have what you're looking for. Stauffacher Apotheke

As for the asian herbs, I'd pop into a larger asian grocery store and ask someone working there. Chances are they will know exactly where you can get some.

Have you tried St Peter Apotheke in Zürich? They're in St Peter Str.(off Bahnhofstr.) They have very many herbal essences and tinctures and will even obtain leeches for you .(These we once needed for a sick horse!) They are open 365 days from 8-20. Tel. 004/211 44 77 Fax 212 04 91. I hope you find what you need I've heard people speaking English and French in there.

Thanks Jack, that is indeed an amazing resource. A similar one with many old english texts scanned (like the Matera Medica etc.) is http://www.swsbm.com/homepage/; you probably know it already.

Unfortunately, I have never had the chance to visit Zurich yet. (I can access Biel/kanton Bern/kanton Neuchatel areas), but if I do I will check those pharmacies .

I am thinking an online source would be really handy as a store that serves the whole of CH would have a high turn over, and thus, a wide range of products, which are likely also fresher. There must be site somewhere!

I'm embarassed...silly me just assumed that you're from Zurich as everyone else seems to be here. I didn't even look

Next time you're in a bigger city, ask at a pharmacy where you can find a natural pharmacy. They'll point you in the right direction - that's how I found the one in Zurich.

Good luck!

Re: Any good herb suppliers? (Dried, fresh and tinctures)

I will do that

In the meantime I found this http://www.spagyros.ch/. They have heaps of tinctures, which I could order at a pharmacy. However, I have never used Spagyrik medicine. Apparently it is a 20% alcohol tincture (less strong than the normal 40-45%) but they burn what is left of the distilled herbs and then add that back to the liquid.

This sounds very vague to me. Has anyone ever used Spagyrik and found it useful? Can anyone compare it to normal strength tinctures, i.e., have you found one more appropriate than another?

Re: Any good herb suppliers? (Dried, fresh and tinctures)

Has anyone found a good internet site isince I first posted? I am still looking for eastern herbs, like Schisandra, Ashwaganda, Astralagus etc.

For European herbs I found a good site in Germany. http://www.kraeuter-kuehne.de/ Their herbs are bio and have a beautiful smell and colour, indicating they have been processed and dried properly, and fairly recently. Shipping was about 14 euros for up to 2 kilos when I tried them.

(I did look up natural pharmacies in Bern but they don't have the eastern herbs and many european herbs they don't want to give out, although they use them when preparing mixtures themselves).

Addition: if anyone is looking for bilberries (similar to blueberries), I found them at Manor and the Migros, something like 7 francs for 400gr perhaps. They make a great tincture.

Re: Any good herb suppliers? (Dried, fresh and tinctures)

Ok, meanwhile I found one online shop that has many herbs including mainstream European as well as Chinese herbs, listed in latin as well as German, at http://www.complemedis.ch/shop/

Then there is a farm which grows bio herbs, but you need to order through a pharmacy and I still need to find one in Bern that has contacts. The number of plants they grow is quite good, and can be found at http://www.martis-kraeuter.ch/pflanzenliste.htm

re. spagyric tinctures, I have never used them myself but from what I know of them they are mainly associated with the loopier arts and are popular among those into alchemy, homoeopathy and energetic medicine. Definitely not your standard western herbalism.

I am also looking for slippery elm in a powder. I've already found yellow dock in a tincture at an Apotheke here in Solothurn. I haven't found slippery elm on any of the sites yet posted to this topic. I'm wondering if it's illegal to bring some back with me from the U.S.?

I just don't know how they have survived over here in europe without slippery elm... it's in all my remedies for the internals.

Re: Looking for herb suppliers?

I am ordering most of my herbal supplements for http://www.iherb.com

Shipping costs are extremely cheap ($6) to Switzerland for orders under 4 pounds and under $80 and pretty fast (10 days average).

For slippery elm, for example:
http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Slipp...4-oz-113-g/788

I have a reward referral code I could give you if you send me a private message - meaning I'll get some $$ off to my next order if you order from them using my code.
