Second-hand Mercedes - Spots under hood

What would be the reason for (whitish) mineral spots on both sides of the engine and on the underside of the hood itself around the same area? This is an under-5 year old Mercedes, still under warranty. Does water from a power wash go under there? If it is something serious, why didn't the garage address it during regular service?

Google didn't help. I didn't touch the spots to check if they were superficial or if they corroded anything. .

Thank you!

Re: Second-hand Mercedes - Spots under hood

You probably need to be more specific or attach photos.

..... "on both sides of the engine" ..... - on the metal, plastic, surrounding components ..... ?

Could be oxidation on alloy, salt deposits splashed up from the road, acid from a cracked battery, arcing from a faulty cable.

The servicing garage would have charged you extra for opening the bonnet.

Probably salt deposit from the road. Taste it and see?

Re: Second-hand Mercedes - Spots under hood

That looks weird. But the pattern to me is suggestive of wheel spray - both sides parallel with the wheels and about the same location.

However I don't think it's natural or normal within such a car. Think how much water must have got in to deposit as much salt.

That would make me question whether there is anything wrong with the shields underneath the engine and around the wheels / underneath the wheel arches. These parts could get damaged/detached/lost when driving over rough terrain / in deep snow / badly fitted chains, etc. Personally I don't like how it looks.

Re: Second-hand Mercedes - Spots under hood

looks like wheel spray. did you inspect the plastic shields under the car? service staff always forget some screws or rush at the end and misfit the shield.

is this something new or have you always noticed these markings for a few years?

is this a front wheel drive 4 cylinder engine?

can you post a picture from the top down so I can see the engine and the gap between the frame and the passenger side

Re: Second-hand Mercedes - Spots under hood

This is an AWD GLK model. It is for sale for around 30 000 negotiable. I went to check it out to see if it would fit my family, but when I popped the hood and saw these spots, plus a couple of other issues, I had second thoughts. I didn't check the underbelly, but if these spots are a serious issue, I'll keep looking.

What color is the coolant? The exact same type and position spots were a signal for a failing semmering with the water pump on my Toyota, but my coolant was pink. It had the exact same crystallization and you could first see it around the pump and later on the hood, exactly like sprayed.

Re: Second-hand Mercedes - Spots under hood

Perhaps the mechanic used drugs during the service and spilled a bit on the engine?
