Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

Hi
New to Switzerland and I am looking to buy from Amazon, but they don't have a Swiss site. The .de site does not deliver all items to Switzerland. Is there any particular online shops ( that would give English options) that you can recommend? I am looking to buy household electrical goods like toaster/iron etc.
Thanks

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

You could try amazon.fr or amazon.co.uk, but they might not deliver either. Note that the plugs for electrical items in Switzerland are different from those in other countries so you'd need to either change them or buy adapters as well.

Why can't you get those things here? They're not that expensive in places like Interdiscount, Media Markt, Otto's or Radikal. By the time you've paid postage you won't save anything if that's what you're thinking.

You're not going to find many places, online or in shops, that will have English so better start learning the German equivalents asap.

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

Hi,

what we do is get things sent to Germany to a mailbox service there and go and then go and collect them. That works really well as we live in Basel which is a border town. You might want to also look at digitec.ch as their prices are very good and also they often stock things that you will not find in other stores. Also you could just go to stores like Media Markt, Interdiscount etc. Electrical and electronic goods are cheaper here than the uk, Germany etc.

Good luck
Martin

For basic household items, like a toaster, iron, etc, just walk into a shop - it'll be much simpler and no more expensive.

With many online order deliveries, if you're not home, they take them back to the post office, so you have to make a trip anyway.

Afterthought: unfortunately, my wife has previously ordered a couple of electricals from Amazon.de - one of which was an iron (so they do deliver these goods, here) - and they come with a German plug, which doesn't fit Swiss sockets - so you either have to cut off the plug and replace with a Swiss one or add an adapter, costing in the region of 8 or 9 chufs.

Another vote for Galaxus (same company as Digitec who are also very good). They are very flexible on delivery (or collection) and payment method.

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

Never had a problem with Amazon.de not delivering to Switzerland.
But, yes some Amazon Market Place dealers to not send to Switzerland. But there is LAS Burg, Grenzpacket, World Packet Shop, Deutsche Lieferadresse to just name a few.

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

I order stuff from Amazon (uk, de, fr) all the time for expensive items as it ends up being a lot cheaper with the VAT difference, and Amazon deal with all of the import issues for me.

Toppreise is used for anything I can't find there.

For cheaper goods I buy locally.

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

I frequently buy from Amazon uk (mostly books, blu-rays, games etc as I prefer the english versions) and I've never had any problem. Just make sure to choose Amazon Global Switzerland on the check-out as they take care of the customs and charges automatically.

Otherwise, if the item you want is from the marketplace, then it depends on the seller if they can send it at all, as someone already said.

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

I just noticed you are looking for "household electrical goods like toaster/iron etc"...

In this case, I'm sure you can buy them from Amazon, but in my opinion it's too much of a hustle as it will take a few days to process the order plus some more to send it and go through customs...

So in the end I don't think you'll save much compared to just going into a brick and mortar store and buying it on the spot. Recently I bought a very cheap iron from Interdiscount for ~30chf, so unless you want something specialized, Amazon won't be much of a help...

Hi,

if you are looking for electronic stuff, toppreise.ch is a great website...
It shows you the best deals and links directly to the item on different shopping websites (for example, microspot.ch, which offers free delivery).

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

When buying from the German Amazon site, Amazon.de, bear in mind that you can save quite a bit on German VAT:
  • 7% on books
  • 19% on most other items

For shipments to Switzerland, Amazon automatically deducts the VAT and displays the net price during check-out.

If the total value of your order exceeds 29€ and you use standard shipping speed (Standardversand), Amazon grants free shipping to Switzerland. If you include at least one book to your package, shipping will be free even if you stay below 29€.

You can look it up here.

On the other hand, you should stay below certain price limits to avoid paying Swiss import tax, e.g.:
  • 200 CHF for books
  • 62 CHF for DVDs, Blu-rays

No import hassle below those limits! Here is an FAQ about this subject by Swiss Post.

I think, nobody can beat Amazon.de when it comes to purchasing books or DVDs/Blu-rays. And it's worth exploring for other products.

I guess there are similar conditions on Amazon.fr and Amazon.it, does anybody know the specifics?

Ooh.... how does Amazon Global Switzerland work? Specifically how/where do I select it? I generally have "1 click" purchasing (or whatever it's called) activated and have not seen this option. Apologies if it's blatantly obvious.

Thanks in advance.

Rufus, you can read up on how customs work when ordering from Amazon.co.uk here.

Re: Amazon switzerland or any other online shopping recommendation

Hi, I moved to Switzerland from Japan last year, and I have confronted the same problem as you. (still now) Especially, it was big suprise and I was disappointed that it's impossible to use amazon.

My recommend:

<Electric appliances, Furnitures +α>
BRAKC
https://www.brack.ch/
Inter Discount
http://www.interdiscount.ch/idshop/index.jsf
Media Market
https://shop.mediamarkt.ch/fr/
comforma
http://www.conforama.fr/
pfister
http://www.pfister.ch/fr/inspiration?0
I feel there a big difference about their service depending on the branch/sales person. Delivery sometimes takes 2 MONTHS! Also, sometimes very "cheap"..(But pfister is too expensive for me.)
IKEA
http://www.ikea.com/ch/fr/

<Supermarket>
Coop
http://www.coopathome.ch/b2c/start/(...pgsize=24)/.do
Migros
https://www.leshop.ch/leshop/Main.do...Menu=SHOP_MAIN
http://www.migros.ch/fr/magasins-spe...ne/offres.html
At Migros, I might be able to find only thier private lavel products depends on category. I reccomend Coop first.
If you want to buy higher quality foods, better to go to Manor Foods. When I need muton, definately go to Manor.

<Book>
Book Depository
http://www.bookdepository.com/

In addition, they are very useful too.
CASA
http://www.casashops.com/ch_de/home.html
Regarding your clothes, you can order at GAP online. (To return is a little difficult or nonsence for us living in Swizerland. Delivery cost is too high.)

There are shops a lots which they don't delivery to Swizerland in Europa.
You might feel uncomfortable, I think you will give up soon..(about everything)
