Laptop stolen.

So, my laptop got stolen recently. Nothing expensive, but it is just a hassle for me now as I had a few important documents on it.

Anything I should do about it? Report to the police etc? Or just forget about it?

Sam

Re: Laptop stolen.

Sort of depends on how it was stolen, no? If I forgot mine on a park bench, I wouldn't report it. If someone broke into my car or home, I would. If someone stole it from my desk at work, I'd report it to the appropriate people at work, etc.

No matter how it was stolen I'd call my insurance company.

... who will probably require a police report before paying out any claims. ;-)

Re: Laptop stolen.

I think someone took it out my bag in a classroom. I do not remember if I left it on the desk or in the bag. Went to get a coffee. Class ended and I assumed it was in my bag probably. Did not need to use it in the last few days so did not think about it and when I looked for it today, then I could not find it. Racking my brains as to where I truly lost it. It's not at home and I just went to class and back.

Re: Laptop stolen.

Not worth the hassle imho unless you want to claim some insurance or the laptop was borrowed, a few days have passed and you're not that sure.
But if you wanna do your civic duty go ahead, I think it would be important for the university or whatever to keep a statistic of thefts (and consider options) maybe you can tell them so they can warn everyone if there are several thefts.
Regarding important documents, keep a backup!

Re: Laptop stolen.

If it was stolen from your classroom, then I'd certainly report it to a member of staff, even if you don't want to go to the police just now.

So you don't know it was stolen, more likely you just lost it

If it was taken from a bag, that's theft. If it's taken from a table that's theft. Seems pretty comprehensive to me.

Re: Laptop stolen.

I would go directly to the police... or do you have it insured?
