Parcel missing/held at customs?

Hello all, first post here - i've been searching through here the last few days, and scouring the swisspost website but here is my problem:

I live in wales and my boyfriend lives in Buchs, St Gallen. On the 1st of September I sent him a load of dairy free protein bars (Nature Valley brand etc) and 3 packets of Oreos! (he's lactose intolerant hence the weird combination of stuff!) the parcel weighed 1.8kg and I sent it via International Tracked & Signed for with the Post Office (3-5 days). I asked the girl about customs etc she asked me how much the value was and I told her about 15, she said it'll be fine. She never asked me whether it's a gift or what was even in the box? (I feel stupid now for not just being more forward and asking about declarations etc) and I wasn't given anything to fill in to state these things? anyway! It was sent on the 1st, the tracking updated to say it was Zurich customs on the 2nd at 7:02pm - Customs clearance underway - but it's not moved since? I'm worried now what she actually put on the box? I've been reading so many posts saying you need to attach an invoice etc on the box? and declare what it is? Shouldn't she of told me this in the Post Office?!? I've never sent anything to Switzerland before! I'm also worried he's gonna get lumped with a customs bill if they have opened it/inspected it, if they even decide its ok to send on? i hope those items aren't prohibited! the most annoying part is this was a surprise for him and he has no idea I sent it I sent an enquiry to them on Monday regarding it since it hadn't moved but as I gathered from reading other threads emailing them is useless! Can anyone give any insight as to whether these things would be confiscated? thanks for help!

Re: Parcel missing/held at customs?

You should have filled in the international customs form CN22:
http://www.royalmail.com/personal/he...s-requirements

No CN22 means the package will most likely be opened for inspection. Swiss post will charge your boyfriend CHF 15 if the opened it. Maybe your BF refused the package as he was not very fond of the charge for a random package out of the blue.

Hint: Try to track the package on the Swiss Post website as tracking information is not always forwarded to the origin country in timely manner.

Re: Parcel missing/held at customs?

If you didn't fill in a customs declaration form (prob the PO girl didn't know that Switzerland is not in the EU ) then my guess is that the parcel is stuck at customs where one day they will decide on the value and how much your BF has to pay in import duty, MwsT and handling charges.

It might be an expensive lesson for you.

Oreos are dairy free? What's the white filling made of, then?

who'd of thought huh? if you read the ingredients milk is not listed.... it just says they MIGHT contain it in the allergy section - he's been eating them no problem since I told him this when I was there last in August, much to his delight

The white cream filling in between the two chocolate cookies in Oreos is mainly made up of powdered sugar, vanilla extract, water, granulated sugar and vegetable shortening. Nabisco, the company that produces Oreo cookies uses other secret ingredients to create the signature taste that many people love.

Makes you wonder what the "cream" refers to doesn't it?

Re: Parcel missing/held at customs?

ahhhhh! I can't believe this I did loads of research on royalmail site aswell and I could of sworn that I read I didn't need to complete a customs declaration sending between UK/Switzerland... I have been using the swisspost site to track it, that's where I saw the information... He definitely hasn't received it because the tracking doesn't even show it left customs yet? plus he'd of mentioned it. I am gutted right now! I'm going to go back to the post office today and ask about it because this isn't my fault at all if they didn't inform me of this surely? I'll have to tell him then today what I've done and feel stupid for a nice surprise going horribly wrong and possibly costing him money grrrr! thanks for the quick replies, I appreciate it as I've been going out of my mind wondering why it's stuck there Do you think it's possible for me to pay the charges for them release it so it won't cost him anything?

I don't think this would be possible, and there is no need to panick. Packages can stay there for 3-4 weeks easily before being opened.
...It would be fun to send some goat's cheese that way, in the middle of summer...

Or like in most cases, they'll open it, see that it contains nothing valuable and forward it without any additional fees. My experience is that they only charge handling when they open and they find something of value to be taxed.

I really hope so! he really wants the stuff (we had been talking about it) as I normally take a shed load with me every time see each other so I don't think he'd mind paying the charges although I might be told off I just hope it DOES get to him! from your experience how long do they normally take to do that?!? I've learnt from him they seem to be very slow at doing things in that country.....

Typically no longer than 4-5 days. If it's not released by the end of this week, I'd assume your brother will get a letter asking to list the contents and value. Then just make sure the total value (including shipping!) is below 65 CHF and it should be all fine.

well it's 5 working days today (it arrived 1 week ago yesterday at 7pm) so I'll give it till the end of the week then the value in total is less than 45CHF including shipping (16.95 postage + about 15 for the snacks!) If it doesn't change on the tracking by Friday I'll just have to tell him I suppose (only because I'm worried about getting surprise fees!)
