Bargaining in Bahnhofstrasse

Hi guys,

Just to share my experience and ask for other to share as well in this tread.

Tourists (chinese, other asian and arabs) tend to go to the luxury stores and get pampered by the shops, and only at the end state they want to buy, but will only pay half. Now, i am sure they will not get 50% discount but at least some thimgand I was wondering if any of you ever bargained hard in the Watch stores like Bucherer and what you were able to realise by doing so. I dont like to do it myself, but paying more than others is equally painfull.

Thank you for sharing!

Re: Bargaining in Bahnhofstrasse

Thanks for sharing your racial stereotypes. What makes you think that anyone only pays half? You can bargain a lot in a Chinese tourist market. You will not manage to bargain much at the Audemars boutique in Beijing.

As per my post, i do not believe they are paying only half.

You have any contructive intell to share please do. This tread is looking to gather quantative facts. Not "yeah you can bargain a bit more here, and a bit less here you racist".

So, if you have bought a watch in the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich (not bejing), please share if you were able to bargain and what %. Thank you.

Re: Bargaining in Bahnhofstrasse

I tried a bit and could get some discounts on watches in the Bahnhofstrasse:
- talking with chinese accent (just replacing r with l): 20%
- dressed up like Arab: 20%
- dressed up like Arab including taking a harem: 30% (note that I had to buy a watch for all girls)
- dressed up like wealth oil industrial: 10%

I wonder why the shops on Bahnhofstrasse pamper Chinese and Arabs more than Dutch customers... maybe because they show less attitude but therefore buy more?

Nice tactics, but don't go straight from Bierfest to Bahnhofstrasse in your German short leather pants, they'll make you pay +10% more, not less.

more because the shop owners are concerned about parked caravans in the Bahnhofstrasse.

I think they get pampered because they have full intention to buy luxury goods, have the money to pay the full price and generally do not waste the time of the store staff. They know they will get a sale.

Re: Bargaining in Bahnhofstrasse

That is not a bad business model to develop a reputation in the Chinese market that bargains and special treatment can be had when buying in Switzerland. Otherwise, fewer may spend their money here. Although I heard that is now drastically declining.

By the way, I though the "R" and "L" replacement is a Japanese accent.

If it's of any help, I also managed to bargain in the local Butcher and got 15% off the sirloin.

Re: Bargaining in Bahnhofstrasse

I did manage to get some extra discount on an already discounted pan in Globus Bahnhofstrasse... I think the extra discount I got was approx. 20%.

I did recently overhear two ladies discussing how one of them manages to regularly get discount in some shops (if I remember it included Globus as well). They did not look rich at all (at least to my eyes )

Re: Bargaining in Bahnhofstrasse

Depending on the shop, luxury goods don't have much issue with a 10% discount. I always wonder what their gross margin is but probably around 20-30%. On clothes, the margin is much higher ...

Japanese: one flap /r/ sound for all R and L - it's called rhotacism.
Chinese: clear soft /l/ sound for all R and L - it's called lambdacism.

If your gross margin is only 20-30%, you will be bankrupt very soon if you have a shop Bahnhofstrasse

How much of that is cumulative?

So if you are a Chinese Arab industrial with a harem and a Donald Trump wig?

At some point you must be getting stuff free, right?
