What happens when the Unemployment allowance (from RAV) finish?

Hi there, I have only a couple of months left with the Unemployment allowance since my last job.
Until now I had some interviews on big and medium size companies and normally I go to the final step but then they choose another candidate (I suppose that my German level as something to do with it). I notice that they are more demanding with German skills and I have between B1 and B2.
I thought that with a Degree and a Master degree you could easily find a job here, but I notice that the opportunities are harder to find now than some years ago.

Can someone help me with some questions?

1 - What happens when the Unemployment allowance (RAV) finish?
(I really have to know that because I have family and without income it doesn't work with all the expenses to pay)

2 - Is there a easy way where I can find a decent job or even temporary job out of my area?

3 - Anyone that has passed the same situation? How was it?

Thanks

Re: What happens when the alloUnemployment wance (from RAV) finish?

If you have a 'C' permit you will be eligible for social security. If you have a 'B' permit you will be asked to go back to your home country.

I have a 'B' permit but I suppose that going to social security is not a good idea. At least I would like to avoid it.

You will, because you won't be eligible for it. Only C permit holders are eligible. As Sbrinz says, you'll be asked to return to your home country.

Apply for any and all jobs you think you might be able to do in hopes of getting work.

You are a short couple of months away from the end of your RAV payments and are only now at this point asking "is there an easy way to get a job outside of my area?" This should have been something you took into account months ago.

I don't think there is any "easy way".. you just have to identify potential career options and then apply like everyone else.

Maybe you are right but I have almost 4 months left and I have always been convinced that I would get a job in the area.

Without knowing what that area is, it's hard for people to give any meaningful advice?

Hmm, I would imagine (guess) civil engineer requires a knowledge of the local language as you would be dealing mainly with local people and not so much the expat scene...?

You are right, but I have worked almost 3 years without a problem. Of course there are always some situations in which I had to explain my self 2 times or ask for clarification.

Re: What happens when the Unemployment allowance (from RAV) finish?

All you can do is keep applying and hope, you'll need to do that to get the unemployment benefit anyway. And form a Plan B for when the benefit ends. As an EU national you sort of revert to tourist status once you deregister so providing you can afford to stay past the end of the benefit you might have a few weeks more to job hunt. Still make plans to head back home/to another EU country just in case. You need to give several months' notice for property rental, etc, so check your contracts to see what you may need to do - otherwise you could be stuck with having to pay rent when you're no longer in the property.

Olá Luís.

Jobs in architecture are very difficult to get since a few years - be it engineering or architecture. It might not look like it, but the building branch has been declining for a while, and jobs are scarce (except, that is, as a trolha...).

Finding a job in this field without a proper knowledge of the language is deadly. We've been looking for people in our office, and most applicant were refused because they can't speak proper German. It gets very frustrating, very quickly, when the information doesn't flow due to lack of language skills.

When I lost my job a few years ago, I had great difficulty finding a new one. Mostly the "Portuguese" on the nationality field put people off (the "female" too, but that's a whole other topic). I actually had a pretty good grasp on the language, though, and a pretty good curriculum.

I got out of the impasse by applying to companies that offer temporary jobs. Namely:

Elita
Work Management

I went there willing to accept a job in a factory. I was desperate to get out of the house. The lady in the Elita was shocked I was willing to "downgrade" so much. I got a job offer 1 week later for a part-time job as a draftswoman (and for that I am eternally thankful to the gentle dame that really fought for me). 1 month later I got a full time job by using Work Management.

The important trick is to be employed. It's ridiculous, but being employed opens doors - it's much easier to find a new job while working for someone else than while being unemployed. These temporary job companies won't get you gorgeously paid jobs, but will get you something. And once you have something, and are not in danger of loosing the permit, better things can be found.

Also, widen your geographic preferences. Basel is not a hot spot for construction. You want to apply to Kanton Zürich and St. Gallen, where stuff is still being built. Also the French part of Switzerland is pretty good on the Portuguese work force.

Boa sorte.

Olá Helm

I know what you mean, I also have suffered before because of my nationality, like some people are afraid that we took their jobs but that subject would deserve another topic .

You talked about an important point, it is much easier to find a job if you are employed than if you are unemployed.

Thanks for sharing your experience and for the tips.
