Post Christmas chat...

Just wanted to find out if others had a 'different' Christmas to normal or if you enjoyed your first one here?

I didn't buy a Turkey this year but just some fillets from Migros (about 12.-) thinking I will go all Swiss this year with Fondue Chinois and still have Turkey in sandwiches for example on Boxing day...turned out the Mother-in-law didn't cook Fondue Chinois, just meat with mashed potato which was a shock!

I think for the next year here at Xmas I will add-in the usual British-style stuff as that was a disappointment, even the christmas pudding as I really missed that (even though I am the one who only eats it).

Church was crap this year, they usually do a lot more for the kids.

Watched the whole Helen Fischer concert with Royal Philharmonic on ORF on Xmas eve.

After 6 years in a row of Swiss Christmas's I feel a 2016 British one coming on..

Re: Post Christmas chat...

Instead of cooking for 6-8 hours, sharing a table with 13 noisy family members, avoiding politics or economics discussions and taking a walk next to the Atlantic ocean, I was alone with Mr. Helm. We shared a simpler version of the Christmas turkey (which turned into a chicken with port wine sauce) and Finnish Christmas cakes, under the threat of having to rush to the hospital at any second.

Was the first time I had a Christmas with so little people. Was odd, but not so bad. I do miss the whole hub hub of kitchen preparations, though.

I have been booked for next year already - there will be turkey in my home country for me. My mom didn't even allow me to make any other plans... Which is fine for me.

Lucky you. I'm not sure but though I'm never bored here in the year but the last 2 Xmas were (I realise) the same as most of them before and with risk of a groan boring... I think I miss the uncle Jim (or whoever) getting pissed type thing ..

Instead of going home to to Ireland for Christmas, this year I spent last week in Las Playitas Resort on Fuerteventura. Best decision I ever made!

Re: Post Christmas chat...

Since moving here 18 years ago, most of our Christmases have been spent in Switzerland. Just the two of us and varying numbers of canines, the reason we never could travel over the holidays.

Typical Swiss holiday activities filled our holiday season: concerts, Christmas markets, the Sternsingenspiel, Midnight Mass at the Kloster, winter hikes, etc. I loved our Christmases here.

These last couple years, though, we have been able to get back home - and suddenly realized how much we had been missing.

Christmas is about family, first and foremost.

In hindsight, we had been filling our Swiss Christmases with activities to compensate for not having family here, taking on traditions that are not ours in order to give the holidays meaning.

But nothing can hold a candle to time spent with loved ones. Back home, Christmas is a veritable Gathering Of The Clan - and it sure feels good to again spend the most meaningful time of the year with the people who mean the most to me.

Re: Post Christmas chat...

I normally hate Xmas and don't do anything special, but this year was particularly awful, even by my lousy standard.

I spent the 24th and 25th at hospital with my sick baby, night included. He was suffering from a particularly nasty bout of bronchiolitis, and he needed oxygen.

Maintaining an oxygen mask on the mouth of an exceeded baby struggling to breathe is definitely NOT fun...

Re: Post Christmas chat...

Well, I for one have shopped the days before Christmas and cooked like crazy till midnight on 24th because we had a few guests on 25th.
Let's put it this way: I am glad that everything is over now....
Next year it will be with my family or my OH's family, so we won't really have to do anything....

Re: Post Christmas chat...

2 kg of beef cooked in the oven when wrapped in water-soaked hay. A traditional Swiss recipe. With roast vegies and polenta.

The beef cost a bit more than 12 CHF. But at least the hay was cheap.

Re: Post Christmas chat...

Actually it was not that bad but I did miss the snow, ice and nice cold weather. Love the afternoon walk in the woods with the fairytale landscape and even though we are 755m above sea level Xmas day day temp was +11 degrees

We spent the day with family: twelve adults, one toddler, one brand new person, one and a half dogs * and it was utterly brilliant.
