Re: Marks & Spencers Swiss store

I remember the one in Geneva. It was horrible!! It seemed like the worst of the worst charity shop!! Overpriced too.

Indeed it was - and provided clothes that only stick insects could get into!

This was my previous argument with M&S before the Swiss website (and its higher prices) came into force. They clearly were not paying VAT on their exports to Switzerland (and they admitted this when I contacted customer services) but they were charging it on the orders. When I tried to point out to their "customer service" why this wasn't fair, they either couldn't grasp it, couldn't care or were purposefully playing dumb.
Pointed it out to them many times and gave up. Buy most of my stuff from Next now.

The M and S store in Geneva was small, cramped and full of unfashionable clothes. They werent fashionable enough for me - and I'm 60!
Speak for yourself! It was the only store where I found a not-so-revealing and decent swimming suit that I had to purchase before going to a holiday with OH and in-laws.
But really, depending on the location and taste, of course, it wasn't totally crap.
And I found the quality to be better than in other places.

Re: Marks & Spencers Swiss store

Finally placed an order today. Well the other 1/2 did. Another two reminders that M&S are a shambles:

1) The whole website is in Swiss Francs. Only at the very last stage does it tell you that they can't take payments in Francs and they'll bill you in GBP. So that's another hit you take on the FX rate and credit card charges

2) We entered the city as Zurich. It gives a popup when you click Confirm Order which says they have detected a mistake and the city should be "Zürich". If you click OK the website then throws an error saying an invalid character has been detected in Zrich (it just removes the character).

M&S are one of the worst examples of e-commerce I have ever seen.

That's weird. That didn't happen to me and I paid in Swiss francs without any problem at all.

Re: Marks & Spencers Swiss store

Yes very weird. I am now wondering if this is a feature specific to AMEX. Maybe should have tried a different card, but the way the website stated it suggested they couldn't take CHF at all.

I paid with MasterCard so maybe it is an issue specific to AMEX.

Re: Marks & Spencers Swiss store

I had the similar issue with Amex payment, i.e. The GBP conversion. However my order confirmation showed the amount which would be charged in GBP (£317) converted into CHF numerically (@ approx 1.25 = 398) but showed the incorrect currency as GBP (i.e. £398 so incorrect and more expensive...).

I emailed them and they confirmed that I would be charged the first conversion amount, which is correct. I will have to check my statement.

The boxes (5 of them!) arrived today and all good.

Wow! That negates the whole point of buying at M&S! Value for money......

The sad thing is that the international app they had was pretty good (apart from the rather confusing "if you want to favourite something you have to add it to your cart first and then save it" part), ordering was quick and easy. I have no idea who told them that this "separate store" thing was a good idea, but it's going to lose them a fortune... It's not like I care too much about the company as such, it's just all the jobs lost and the diversity of the high street shrinking further that bothers me when a company becomes too incompetent to survive...

Re: Marks & Spencers Swiss store

New signs up to M&S Swiss website get 20% off.

With the option to have all extra charges taken care off it is now appealing and
pretty good value. Ordered a lot of stuff including pillows etc... 14 pairs of cotton rich socks for CHF 27!

https://www.marksandspencerlondon.com/ch/newsletter

Different to the route link I originally found yesterday which made it out to be a Swiss specific offer but it gives the same...ie sign up to their newsletter on this link and get 20% off your first order. You are given the code to use on your first order on completion of sign up.
Orders over CHF 100 free delivery and up front option to pay for all subsequent Swiss related import charges.

Heads Up, check your invoices

Ordered a package from M&s Swiss store. Was over the limit for free shipping (so wasn't given choice of courier). I also selected to pay customs and VAT up front.

Package arrived DHL last Thursday afternoon. Didn't sign for it, as not here, but left at door.

Yesterday received invoice from DHL for customs, VAT, and CHF41 'handling fees'.

Either DHL, who isn't even my 49th choice as a courier, is just trying it on or M&S have some problems in their shipping department.

Sent online message to M&S as their telephone contact not working (an 031 number that doesn't even ring, let alone get answered) asking them to sort it out with DHL. No response yet. After further thought I sent the invoice back to DHL, registered mail, with a copy of my M&S confirmation showing customs and VAT already paid and suggested they contact shipper for payment. I also reminded them that their contract is with the shipper, not with me.

Caveat emptor
