I find it odd that someone actually bought pens so expensive. Pens?

How much would a letter written by such miracle cost?
At the high end, the pen price typically comes in large part from the value of the precious metals or stones used in the design. Although fully functional as pens, they move into the realm of art pieces and jewelry. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires. Gold silver and platinum. Some can be seen as design projects with intricate mechanisms and limited production that also command a high price. The same is true of those pens with unique elements or rare materials. Having something handmade with gold from an Apollo series moon lander or 1300 year old olive wood also adds elements people will pay for.

As for what a letter might cost? Well, the same market also supports specialty handmade papers, exotic inks and numerous other related items.

Re: Place to sell luxury fountain pen ?

Exactly.

Who could possibly imagine ever paying the equivalent of 500 Cartier fountain pens for a small piece of compressed carbon?

Nope. I have some expensive pens and that bit of gold or the amethyst or sapphires used on the wife's pens in no way accounts for the price. The steel and plastic (even if the manufacturer rather says "resin" than "plastic") of my personal ones are effectively worthless and surely cannot explain the price.

You are paying a lot for the design and crafting of the pen and then at least as much for the marketing expenses of the larger brands. And of course for the rents on Bahnhofstrasse... and the shop keeper.

Expensive pens are in that regard pretty much the same as watches. Luxury items, nothing more, nothing less.
