Bonfires or burning garden waste in Zürich?

Hello

Anyone know the regulations for burning some branches that are in my garden, well quite a lot of branches, as a few weeks ago in the strong winds a tree in our garden was blown over, it was rotten. So to save money I chainsawed it myself, but of course there are still lots of branches, more then we can fit in the green waste bin, thankfully its winter so the biomass is not enormous. I was wondering what the regulations are for fires in a garden in Zürich as I presume we can light a barbecue, but its quite a lot of kindling to use. Are we allowed fire pits too?

Searched the forum under bonfires, but there was just the 5th Nov. stuff.

Cheers

Um! it say until end of Feb in Zürich, but that its still prohibited to burn waste wood?

"Rauchende (nicht bewilligte) Feuer oder das Verbrennen von Altholz (gilt als Abfall) im Freien ist verboten und kann bei der Kantonspolizei verzeigt werden."

Are branches considered old wood?

Regardless of the legality (which of course must be checked):

If the branches were just cut a few weeks ago you might find them too green to burn. Can you save the wood for a while, let it dry?

Whenever we have to cut down a tree, OH first chops the large branches into fire logs, the smaller into kindling size. Stack and let dry - we usually let it dry a year. Even a small space in a protected spot can be used for a firewood stack with rain protection. If you can't use the fire wood, likely a neighbor would be happy to have it.

The bits and bobs not suitable for fire logs or kindling go through the shredder, to be used as garden mulch. If you don't have a shredder, does one of your neighbors? A keen gardener would likely be happy to shred yours for you.

Once the firewood or kindling is dry, we use the wood in our outside chiminea. You can find all sorts of small patio-sized outdoor fire thingamajigs today at surprisingly good prices; if you enjoy sitting out of an evening and have trees that need regular pruning, perhaps a good investment.

---

Check local regulations for ash disposal.

---

Open fires, such as a fire pit, are generally forbidden where we live by the way. No idea about ZH, check with your Gemeinde.

---

All else fails, use the left over wood to make a hedgehog friendly natural corner in your garden. And tell the neighbors it's not a mess, it's responsible environmental friendly gardening.

Tree branches are not considered "Altholz". Altholz refers to things like furniture, fenceposts, garden furniture....basically anything that has or has potentially been treated with chemicals (stains, paint, glues, etc.,...).

Re: Bonfires or burning garden waste in Zürich?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Meloncollie, I have definitely saved enough wood for BBQs and if we start using the woodburner in the kitchen. Its that there is still a huge pile of thin branches that I have broken down with a chainsaw.

I might leave it a while and buy a metal burning bin if they are available here? And or slowly every two weeks disperse it through the Green Waste bin.

Marshmallows and wieners on sticks all round!

Check for small animals, e.g. hedgehogs, perhaps also amphibia, once you intend to burn the stuff. The less leaves and needles there are in the pile the less likely you'll have issues in this regard, it will also help dry the twigs.
