Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

If you live there, your kids are put into the Gockhausen school, wether you like it or not. I had a friend who worked at the Kindergarten there and she says it is a good school, and as she is a very good teacher, I believe it.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

who is actually living there? we bought a place but cant move in before october 2018. cant wait! my wife and i have a 6 month old boy. we visited the village a couple of times, i have checked early mornings and early night for the noise of planes which we found ok before we agreed on the deal. we talked to a few (older) swiss and expat couples that were really helpful for our decision. would be cool to meet a few new neighbors once we're there! people said, its a bit of a community feel to it, because there is bbq party organised and other stuff. my wife is not working yet and will start maybe 2019. so would be nice if therewas something like that zurich coffee moms thingy or events to attend...any feedback on that? cheers!

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

Hello, since I started this thread, my friend did relocate to Gockhausen, simply because she had been offered a lovely house with a garden there, for much less than small and noisy apartments in Hottingen/Fluntern she viewed with her relocation agent. Well, it did not go well, I am afraid... She could not bear the airplane noise, neither did her child was happy with it. She complained about having to wake up at 6am every morning and not being able to get any proper rest until past eleven at night. Particularly in warm/hot weather when one wants to keep windows open... Airplane noise and vibration it caused were overwhelming, she said. In addition, she did feel cut off from the city life and somewhat isolated from the international community. While there are quite a few expats there, she said "it did not feel quite right". And every trip to Zurich proper felt like a 'project' or a chore... But the main thing was the relentless dominating airplane rumble that she felt was damaging to hers and her daughter's health, and their sense of wellbeing was not quite there.. So, after just five months, she packed up and moved to an apartment in Hirslanden, where they are very happy now. From what I hear, she is not the only one moving out for all the reasons she mentioned, noise being the main issue. Many people leave Gockhausen or treat it as a temporary stop - so there is a definite feeling of transiency there, she noticed.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

ok, i live "downtown" Zurich, close to Langstrasse. i have a proper n tight sleep, so has my wife. hence i see it as an improvement to have a couple of planes coming and going instead of party goers and cars 24/7. i was there and stood outside the house, found noise very much beareable when the planes came in. as this stretches all over the village, our area seemed to be less hit, but i cant say for real, if it isnt just a small glimpse of the whole situation. the last 10 years i appreciated the city life, now i am ready for "retirement" . the daily commute is an issue, yes. but when the weather is good i want to ride my scooter into town, else i try to catch the train at Stettbach station that is 5 mins by bike. Dübendorf and Witikon are close by for shopping, difference is its going to be more planned and catch some milk at my local indian späti wont work anymore. the only concern is how we integrate and if my son will be happy up there... lets see. sad your friend has left but good to hear she found a nice place to live.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

We have a good view of the planes flying in over Zurichberg early morning or late at night from the garden, balcony in Wallisellen. I have always wondered if they made more noise over Gockhausen.. they seem to glide in from where we are and I see them but rarely hear them, lest it be the low hum that doesn't bother us at all. Apart from a couple of mid-day flight take offs, the birds in my back garden are louder, no joke!

Funnily enough we also lived the other side of Gockhausen in Freudenbergstrasse for a few years, between Toblerplatz and Rigiblick Seilbahn, and were never bothered by plane noise there either.

Maybe we just got use to it.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

I live in Zurichberg, on Susenbergstrasse. We do hear airplanes and sometimes they are quite noisy but not even a fraction of what they experience in Gockhausen! Something to do with a curve of the hill, I guess.

Certainly, some people are more sensitive to various noises than others. However, my friend did some research and it transpires that there are between 400,000 and 500,000 flights handled by Zurich airport each year, and Gockhausen is under the main take-off/landing path, so this is a far bigger problem than couple of airplanes flying overhead high enough to be simply a background buzz... They are very low - 1000ft / 300m!! and there are actually a couple of them EVERY MINUTE or so! Vibration is an added nuisance.

But again, for some people it may not matter. But it drove my friend and her 3-year old child nuts...

mhm, that is interesting, because we spoke to people being 35 years resident, 2 couples with toddler up there 2 and 5 years, and a teenage girl, all living in different areas of the village. all said its no big deal?! i stood outside, they glide over and the noise was a laugh, really. also your friends reserach is not quiet right. take-offs over Gockhausen are not allowed and yet not planned. also Bundeshaus said, if over Pfannenstiel will be take-offs, other landstrips will be considered first just to lay the burden on many shoulders, kind of. see i dont want to defend it. if your friend did not like it there its ok. also, looking at places available for some time: real estate is pretty much sought after. its very little on the market, the prices are set after 2006-2009, when the devaluation set in and is cleared now. " definite feeling of transiency" i dont see?

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

I wish you many years of happiness and laughter - you will have to laugh a lot as there will be at least 17-20 planes each hour flying 300m above your roof . Seriously, good luck!

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

I have to say, I live in a tower not far from Glattpark and have a great view of the planes taking off and landing. Even got a nice video of Trump Force One leaving CH the other day!

There is some noise, for sure, but I sleep with my bedroom window open all year round and the noise doesn't annoy me at all. If windows and doors are shut, you hear nothing - modern building standards and insulation are pretty good at noise dampening it seems.

If you were in a direct flight path (doesn't sound like Flow will be) then I'm sure it COULD be a problem, but I honestly quite enjoy being able to watch everything take off sometimes, and when I've had enough, close the window.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

Reviving this thread to ask if there are any new perspectives on schools and air traffic and opinions on living in Gockhausen with children.

Would love to hear experiences of families with children who have attended the local primarschule and Sek in Dubendorf!

Has airplane noise changed these last three years?

It's hard to tell in COVID times. I live in a nearby village (Fällanden) and I didn't have any noise problems whatsoever. The only time we had aircraft noise was caused by military exercises.

True! This has been such a strange time, though it feels like there is hope on the horizon.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

I think what bothers people is the early morning approaches. The pilots reduce the engine power and pretty much glide towards the runway before starting the final approach, which results in a slightly eerie whistling sound. It woke me up when I once spent the night at a friend's place, despite being used to the actual final approach sound since I live in Glattpark.

Mind you, I've found that your mindset towards the noise is pretty crucial when it comes to getting used to it. If you have decided that it's an issue, it will be.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

I just mistakenly read the thread’s title as “Living in ghost house with children”.
If that’s the case, I would strongly recommend to leave it ASAP or hire ghostbusters team.
