Living in Gockhausen with children

Hello, I would appreciate any feedback/advice/experiences shared on living in Gockhausen (Zürich, 8044) with kids. A friend is looking to relocate from Cambridge (UK) and was offered a reasonable housing option there. She has a child about to start kindergarten and is interested in all aspects, both positive and negative, on living in this area, e.g. public transportation to the city (she does not drive), quality of kindergarten/schools, general atmosphere (international? provincial?), what kind of people gravitate towards the area, whether she is bound to feel isolated among the locals, for instance, etc etc. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Oh yes, the Lyceum . But do they really live there? I think they mostly drive their kids to and from school.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

I used to live in Gockhausen, but this was about 20 years ago so my info may be out of date.

Public transport is reasonable. The number 751 bus runs half hourly at normal times and every 15 minutes at peak times, and is pretty punctual and reliable. Another plus is the proximity of the forest, and being able to walk to the zoo easily. So pretty ideal if you have younger children. The main road is fairly busy but the side roads are all extremely quiet so if you're living there traffic and traffic noise are non isues. One of the down sides is that there is very little actually going on in Gockhausen itself so be prepared to travel into Zürich for any form of entertainment.

I know there is a school but don't know very much about it. Sorry about that.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

In recent years there has been a lot of protesting abot the flight path over Gockhausen, so early morning flight noise could be an issue.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

Gockhausen is lovely spot. Down the hill you're into Dubendorf easily enough and have access to the Greifensee (lake) for summer picnics and swimming. If you can walk up to the Zoo then you have the trams 6 and 5 which take you into Zurich centre. And, as amogles said, you've got the regular bus line direct through Gockhausen.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

Depending on which bit of Gockhausen you're in, there are also some stunning views over the surrounding countryside. If the weather is clear you can see for miles.

To Swisstree Thank you for your response. Do you know anything about public schools that children attend if they live there? Thanks.

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

Little piece of Gockhausen trivia.

Many people think Gockhausen is part of Zürich. In fact the postal code 8044 is shared with parts of Zürichberg, so the assumption is reasonable. However, Gockhausen is actually part of Dübendorf. So that's the Gemeinde you would have to go to for all official stuff etc, possibly including school matters.

You're never far away from a Swiss Kindergarten or a primary school in any village spot like Gockhausen. I know of a KG near the Zoo and a primary school down in Dubendorf. Have you rang the Gemeinde to find out which schools are available or close by to where you will live?

Re: Living in Gockhausen with children

Thank you for your reply. I am actually asking for a friend who is still in Cambridge, but I shall tell her to ring the local school board. I think she is not that concerned about distance, as things tend to be well arranged for kids in this respect in CH, but mostly quality of schools. E.g. whether she would sacrifice the quality and an international mix if she choses better housing in Gockhausen vs. smaller and less comfortable (and much more expensive!) place in Hottingen.

There's a combined Kindergarten/Primary school in Gockhausen.

If I had to chose between Gockhausen and Hottingen for a family with young kids, I'd definitely go for Gockhausen. But maybe that's just me.

Maybe she can arrange to come over and have a chat with the teachers.

She may be surprised.

Gockhausen may well be more international than first impressions suggest.

Anyway, young kids can absorb new languages at rates that just make us adults drool with envy.

If those were my kids, I wouldn't worry about it.
