Mounting a Ceiling Projector

So I just tried to mount our new projector on the ceiling in our standard swiss box room ... and of course it was a pita!

Found the "joists" (well at least I found objects running across the room along the shortest length) using a stud finder. They appeared to be spaced out by maybe 20 cm, which I thought was a little narrow. Then I found some other objects running along the longest part of the room with the stud finder with much larger spacing.

Anyway I gave it a drill, went through 1-2 cm of plaster then hit something that I couldn't drill through at all. Only plaster came out, no other residue. So I don't think I hit wood ... unless petrified wood is used as a ceiling support.

Just flipped the breaker, and the lights are still on, no smoke is drifting through the room and no water is rushing out of the ceiling.

Does any one know if ceilings here are made differently then in the civilized world? Or any idea what the hell the objects I tried to drill into are?

It's a 70's apartment building, with some floors above. Exact same apartment found across the entire city, so it should be relatively standard.

Re: Mounting a Ceiling Projector

Curious; when I mounted the ceiling lights, it was a wooden ceiling above them in the hole. Same with another other room.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to mention it.

Re: Mounting a Ceiling Projector

In the center of many rooms is a wooden block, about 10 cm square, with the electricity for the lamp coming out of a hole in the block. You can then easily screw the lamp to the wooden block.

From your description, do you have a ceiling made from reinforced concrete, and covered with wooden beams to make it look old? Then covered with plaster board to make it look modern?

It might be easier if you screw a thick plywood board to the joists, and then you can easily fix the projector to the board.

I suspect you hit steel. Not uncommon in those ceilings.

And you were drilling holes in the ceiling after 20:00! Not a good way to impress the neighbours.

Our new neighbors are smokers, and their smoke drifts through a vent below our refrigerator. This is our way of saying thank you

Thanks for the replies. I did a test drill and went through the plaster beside the "joint" and it was all hollow there. Now we're considering rearranging the room and buying a self-standing shelf.
