Which Kreis to find apartment in Zurich

I need to find an apartment in Zurich. I want to narrow my search down to the correct Kreis when searching. I work near the airport so would prefer there. I want to ask whiich Kreis is airport in?

Alternatively I am looking for cheap apartment. I currently commute 2 hours from Basel so wouldn't mind an hour commute as long as the cheaper apartment wasn't nullified by an expensive travel ticket. any tips on a suitable kreis are welcome.

Thank you.

Re: Which Kreis to find apartment in Zurich

Oerlikon is super-convenient to reach the airport.
The rents outside of Oerlikon are - as something of a generalisation - lower in the adjacent suburbs of Seebach (also Kreis 11) and Schamendingen (Kreis 12).

A "Kreis", in this context, is a sub-zone or district or quarter of the city. The City of Zurich is divided into 12 Kreis, numbered 1 to 12.
The airport, however, is outside of the City of Zurich, and therefore not in a Zurich Kreis.

Have a look at the public transport zone maps here.
http://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/travelcards...zone-maps.html

The public transport are not 100% identical to the official, political/municipal divisions, but almost so. They will give you a good idea of the geography, and are relevant for buying the right ticket.

All the Kreis in the City of Zurich (Kreis 1 to 12) are within public transport Zone 110.
The airport is in an adjacent zone outside of the city perimeter, in Zone 121.

You can try Kloten,Bassersdorf ,Glattbrugg, Wallisellen or Opfikon, which are closer to the airport(and will be cheaper to rent but will be more affected by starting/landing planes).

Have a look at homegate or other websites.

Yes ,shure, but they are well connected by public transport to the airport.

Seebach is connected by bus service 768 to the airport , so could be another option.

Re: Which Kreis to find apartment in Zurich

Wallisellen, 12 minutes by bus to the airport and the distinct advantage of a lower tax rate. Probably similar with other smaller towns just outside Zurich

Regarding the above I just want to clarify what you mean.

None.
The airport is in Kloten (all Terminals), as well as Opfikon, Rümlang, Oberglatt and Winkel.

The closest Kreis of the City of Zurich is Kreis 11 consisting of Seebach, Oerlikon and Affoltern. The Seebach Neighborhood is the one closest to the Airport. But Oerlikon has the fastest connections.

Once you move to Switzerland and register (with the local municipality) your so-called "foreigner clock" will start running. This is a colloquial expression for the counting of the days you have been resident in Switzerland. It is relevant for subsequent permit renewals and later for naturalisation.

Because so many things in Switzerland work differently, not only from canton to canton but municipality to municipality, it is best to start out, if at all possible, in the municipality (called "Gemeinde" in German) in which you would be likely to continue to live. If you move to another municipality, your foreigner-clock will (at least for some purposes) be re-set to zero, and the more effectively so if you move outside of the canton.

Because you're new, you can't reasonably expect to Get It Right right away, and many people first find their way a bit and then move again to a more suitable home. All the places people have named outside the City of Zurich are small (have a look at them in Google Earth), so they don't provide much scope for moving home. Zurich City itself has so much more to offer.

All the places named in this thread so far are in the Canton of Zurich.
Zurich City is the capital of the Canton of Zurich.

I sent you the public transport map so you can get an idea of the tickets you'd need, depending on where you lived.

Re: Which Kreis to find apartment in Zurich

Wipkingen is a bit further out from the airport (Kreis 6) but parts of it nearer the station there could be nice. Trains go to airport in about 15 mins.
There is also a connection to the airport from Station Hardbrucke (Kreis 5, industrieterrein) which is also nice.

Wow. Do you know of an available apartment in Wipkingen? We would love to live there but apartments are super hard to find - that is, anything larger than a one or two room place. OP would be well advised to grab anything affordable that he can get, imho.

I don't unfortunately. Grab what you can via an estate agent. I know many possible tennants turn up to see WG rooms and flats there.
