Do people actually communicate anymore?

Last week a neighbour told me about a radio program in the morning. The journalist asked people:" Is there a life after birth?".
He got loads of answers about heaven, reincarnation, like "well, I don't know but if there is I would rather be born as a dog next time" and stuff like this.

While you've been reading, did you notice that the question was not heard?
Yes, the journalist wants to take the piss out of people but he also wants to make a point.

I notice this more and more often over the months, more likely even years but either it gets worse or I get more annoyed about it .
Some people give long speeches yet do not reply to the posed questions. Some brabble assumptions, freely adding or leaving out clear information given by the questioner. Others repeat their answers over and over - or even worse just repeat other people's answers as if they were their own (the repeat factor is what drives you up the friggin' walls). People correcting other people's mistakes - which they didn't make
Some people are capable of talking about two totally different things ... apparently to each other (if you're the third at the table, observing that is quite an experience!)

Does anyone else notice that? Is it the twitter/facebook/internet/whats-app times? Do people just like to hear themselves talk (as we say here)? Are some people so wrapped up within themselves that they don't "need" the outside world anymore, talking to themselves keeps them perfectly happy? Or could it be avoiding confrontation - if you don't hear what the other one says he can't annoy/challenge you? This latter would not apply generally as some people start a rant - free of any connection to what was originally said - just base on one word.

If you have noticed this penomenon, what do you do when you're around such people? Try to "wake them up"? Try to moderate the conversation? (in the sense of bringing structure into it). Walk away?

As I'm in a good mood 98% of the time I usually amuse myself - or even have a real good laugh. Sometimes I feel the need of making a point but that is usually when I feel, somebody needs to be defended. In the other 1% of the time I can get grumpy or I just go quiet and/or walk away.

Re: Do people actually communicate anymore?

Well, I don't think anybody can really know, to be honest.

Personally, I'd go for the latter, but I can understand why somebody wouldn't. It's all subjective.

Also, women might feel differently, especially if they grew up in Switzerland or Austria.

That's a good question, actually a very good question even. Let me rephrase it so we shed light on all its facets. Do I notice it, do my relatives notice it, do my neighbors, colleagues, friends notice it? To answer this, please allow me to give you an example from my own experience, based on observations collected in the course of many years.....

Curley, have you ever listened to a politician ? That's the way they answer questions. Politicians, just like lawyers (which often is the same anyway) use smokescreens. It's the kind of job that needs the ability to speak for several minutes until they can come up with something substantial or the listener loses interest, whichever comes first. Seems to rub off on other people too, but has been around for ages.

I never walk away. I just keep explaining why their answer isn't an answer, then I repeat the question, and explain what the question means.

I rarely need to do this more than three times, by which time the ones who can't be arsed to communicate walk away. The ones that stay I can then have a decent conversation with without some twat distracting us.

@ JW and DB, I'm pleased you understood the question. And indeed yours might be the best way to deal with it (that's my 98% solution)

Captain, you don't need to teach me about politicians. Even though I don't hang out with them - or I don't hang out with them BECAUSE of that. It's nice you believe they have such an impact but I doubt their ways actually rubbed off so strongly (very sophisticated excuse though)

Talking without listening is something quite easy. The real thing is the ability not to answer a question - and get away with it. That brings you to a c-level function or makes you a successful politician.

quite sad actually.

Re: Do people actually communicate anymore?

I asked my daughter this question tonight, I explained that in my time we worried about, and discussed, "Abortion" "The Bomb" "Homosexual Marriage" etc, and I then asked her what the youth of today talk about?

Answer: holidays and travel, quality of life for farmed animals, fashion, and thatīs about it...

Maybe they have an easier life than I had?

That surprises me. If anything I find my children and their friends are much more politically aware of global concerns than I remember being.

I see it on TV with poor quality interviewers, they're already rehearsing their next question whilst the subject is answering. Bring back Parky.

Depends. Do you deliver coffee or dinner when she does? Or do you tweet (or what is it called on FB) her the latest motorbike story instead?

Re: Do people actually communicate anymore?

I think it's because of the developing of the internet. Nowadays you can check/read/learn almost everything online and so is born some sort of shame for not knowing something. And when someone asks another something and the other doesn't know the answer or is quite unsure what it's expected to say, he pretends that he heard something different or the question is two-sided and starts to talk in his comfort-zone.

On the other side there is lack of critical-thinking stimulation in school (or at least in my country) and I've noticed most of my peers and the younger ones find it difficult to think in perspective and make a plan from p. A to p. B. And this includes the understanding of what is being actually asked.

//I haven't written more than two-sentenced opinion for quite a long time so excuse my English pls
