Postal service – CH to US

Postal service – CH to US

A package from Switzerland to me (in California) has not arrived, although it should have been here quite a while ago. It contained several packs of Nuss-Stängeli. I know it’s a lost cause, and I am resigned to having to order again.

What I would like to know, for my own edification, it how it is likely to have been handled.

It was dropped off at the Post Office in Lausanne. From there, I suppose that it was taken by truck to the Zurich airport, and handed over to Swiss. From there, it probably went to New York, where it was transferred to the US Postal Service.

So we now have at least three different entities involved, with some twenty people having handled that shipment.

Can somebody confirm that this is a likely scenario? I am not looking for sympathy. I just would like to know how the process works.

Thank you.

Re: Postal service – CH to US

The post.ch web has a tracking service and you can check, the number should be on your receipt. It can take even 5-6 weeks sometimes. Food items can't be sent I was informed. And, your scenario is probably true. When you track, you will see a day or two in CH, the rest is customs and security in the US plus sometimes the tracking stops as it flies in. The process is slower if the packaging gave in, too. You might still get your stangeli thingies.

Re: Postal service – CH to US

Thanks for the confirmation.

The package was not insured (my mistake).

The Swiss post office was able to trace it part of the way (maybe until it reached New York). After that, it's in the hand of the USPS, and they don't track foreign shipments, unless they are insured or registered.

Re: Postal service – CH to US

I never insure mail, tbh. And you can't insure stangeli without owning up to it on the customs form. As food items aren't allowed (postal clerk told me), then when sent - you just simply use the automatic tracking number from the receipt. The number tracks only till JFK and then Swiss post signals when the package reaches the recipient.

I am sure you can find some low sugar nutty hippie granola bars in Cali?

Re: Postal service – CH to US

I have often sent parcels (packages) to family in the US. Initially when I paid I would ask how long it would take, the reply was within 5 days. When it became obvious that in actuality it would take more like 3 to 4 weeks, I made a comment to my La Post lady, she replied that this "guarantee" actually means it will reach the US within that time, after which it's all up to the US Postal service. Tracking future parcels sent it certainly showed the parcels arriving in the US well within the 5 days as promised. US Postal services are notoriously slow to clear parcels through customs and then get them delivered, on the other hand, and when sending to Scotland, it always arrives within the given time frame, thank you Royal Mail.

"Wonders will never cease" or "Miracles do happen"!

The package arrived today, 43 days after being posted in Switzerland.
It had not been opened, so the possibility of a delay at customs is small.
Just slow post office services.

On the tune of « Il est de retour le joyeux mois de mai », I was singing « Il est arrivé mon paquet de biscuits ».

Re: Postal service – CH to US

Going the other way......I purchased a used book from a bookstore in Brooklyn. It was sent March 20, supposed to arrive no later than June 12. it was lost, so they are sending me another.

Apparently, these guys send the book to london, and then royal mail sends it on. I guess it's cheap, whether reliable is unknown. I paid about 20chf to ship, I think. No tracking with the first one, hoping they track the second.

Maybe they have a deal with Royal mail, or maybe they just think Europe is England. No idea.

Yeah, a nice Cabernet Sauvignon does go well with the "stangeli thingies".

The déclaration en douane showed "16x350g biscuits HUG", and the 'cadeau' box was checked. But I have a feeling that the US Customs never even looked at the paperwork.

All's well that ends well.

That's great! I sent Dijon mustard in a jar that cracked open once, the box tore opened too and all arrived late, but surprisingly enough it arrived, it looked like somebody was playing basketball with the box. Even with leaky food it arrived, though. The regulations got pretty strict in terms of food and agro products.

The tracking system is pretty efficient, although for me the info showed up as it left the CH and then when it reached the destination, long pause in between.

Speaking of which, I will get some stangeli thingies tomorrow..

So it took 4-5 days to get from CH-US, and 5 weeks to get to you? Wonder if it just sat somwhere for a while or toured the US?

Re: Postal service – CH to US

Hi Swiss Pete,

I am also in a similar situation. I stay in the US. I was supposed to get cash delivered from the Swiss. But It has not been delivered. It has been more than 2 months. The sender has used PostFinance and has given me a receipt. The receipt just contains the e-finance number. Do you have any idea on how to track the document?
