Help identify this book

Years years years ago when I was 7 or 8, I read a few pages of a sci-fi book about a group of indian children with superpower, or something like that. I vaguely remember that it started with a boy who can fly around, watching his city from above, and then it went to explain a bit about the caste system in India. Any idea which book it could be?

Rushdie didn't do Sci-Fi last I heard. Or maybe he was onto something.

Given the short summary my first thought was also Rushdie.
Saladin and Gibrils fall from the sky in the Satanic Verses for example. He also has space themes and even references to Star Trek in East, West. Maybe it is a Rushdie novel published under a pseudonym.

Re: Help identify this book

It does sound like Satanic Verses. I can't think how a 7-8 year old read it though. I guess if someone reads it at that age, they will think it is sci-fi. Different if you read it in your 20s.

Not my genre actually. One can, but, diversify.

Nothing he wrote was particularly good.

That's why he had to kick up all the controversy. There are different roads to fame.
