Hello, I'm new here and am looking for someone

I don't know if this is the right place to post this. So forgive me if it's not.

I'm looking for a woman who lives (has lived?) in Kreuzlingen.
We were very close growing up in the States and people often thought we were related, cousins.

We lost touch a few years back.
I don't have any of her information after a move my family and I made. So many items/papers/pictures were lost in that move.

I heard through the grapevine that she may have died.
I'm so upset by this (mis) information and would like to find out.

I contacted The Swiss Center of North America. They referred me to another agency -City Administration Kreuzlingen.

They sent me an email that they cannot help me.

How can I find out if my person has died or not?

Here in the States we can look up names from local newspapers, Social Security Death Index, Ancestry.com and usually can find out one way or another.

Is there somewhere I can do the same for Kreuzlingen?

Thank you for any help.

Phoebee

If she is living in Kreuzlingen you might find her in the telephone book https://tel.local.ch/

You could write to the town of Kreuzlingen, but they will only answer your letter if there is a need to give you the address (unpaid bill, credit note, etc)
http://www.kreuzlingen.ch/verwaltung...enfte.html?L=0

In Switzerland the town where the seat of the family lies, records civil matters related to it's citizens. This can be anywhere in Switzerland and is called their "Heimat".

The easiest way for you is probably to employ a private detective.

Just to avoid any confusion, the word you need in German is "Heimatort". Heimat is simply native land. Confusing to everyone but native Swiss, Heimatort is not necessarily where a Swiss was born. In these times of increased mobility, it is indeed unlikely to be so. Quite a few Swiss citizens have never even been to their Heimatort. But, as Sbrinz says, that is where one's records are kept.

And even if not.

If I put in just my last name, and no town, I still find myself, but there are only 8 listings with that name in the whole of Switzerland, with a more common name there will be many more.

Phoebee, she could have moved too, or live in the region of Kreuzlingen, not the town itself. Using Search.ch (link below), just enter her first and last name, leave everything else blank, and see what pops up.

https://tel.search.ch/

You can select the language top right.

Re: Hello, I'm new here and am looking for someone

While not a definitive list, you could try this site, TodesanzeigenPortal, a listing of obituaries:

https://www.todesanzeigenportal.ch/t...NfmX424pqgvurt

I found it by Googling Todesanzeigen Kreuzlingen. Looks like there are entries going back to 2013. The portal is Switzerland wide (i think, or maybe just German speaking Switzerland, i have not tried to look up anyone across the Rostigraben) so searching with your friend's name will of course be easier.

These are not official records, but a place to start. Be aware that in some places/families publishing an obit in the local paper is not done to the extent that it is in some places/families in the US.

(Or simply google Todesanzeige + your friend's name.)

Be aware though, that these are only directories of people with fixed telephone lines - my surname gets 122 and >12000 hits respectively (the latter including other spelling variants that are much more common as first names) but I'm not listed in either, having given up a fixed line some years ago.
