Re: Basel VS Zurich

Hi,

I love the ability to live one of the best and richest cities in Switzerland, so I not sure where your idea about provincial life comes from.

I only groaned at one person who seemed to simply groan at any one who dared to disagree with his unique opinion of Basel and one other groan which simplest said there is not point to discuss and only my opinion matters. I am

I am glad to have provided some real life and practical factual information. I very seldom ever groan anyone and I have tried to provide a positive and factual content.

I would be delighted to seen the unmerited groans I received removed and then I would more than happy to remove the ones I gave.

Have fun
Martin

You've not integrated at all in Switzerland if you don't understand the differences (and beef!) between Zurich and Basel.
I understand it exactly. Like ex-smokers, the most extreme are the newly-minted wannabes. I've rarely met a Swiss person who gave two tosses about it and I don't either.

Re: Basel VS Zurich

Hi,
I have heard SRF referred to at Zurich television as the main news stories seem to always be about Zurich. I think in the end people in Zurich care most about Zurich but the rest of Switzerland tends to ignore Zurich when they can. When you are integrated you realise that.

Have fun

So Basel is mostly good because it's so easy to go somewhere else? It's btw not "somewhat smaller"... the city proper has about 140k people...

Yeah - kinda like the best thing about London is there are no more English people there...

Keep in mind, when he says, "pub transport is crap", he means it is 15 sec late.
Nope you are wrong. That's not what I mean at all.

On transportation: I live in London, but I am Italian, so I am pretty used to buses not showing up at all, therefore even the most disgraceful place in CH will be more than fine for me;

I think I got the perspectives I was looking for, that I'll put together with the "professional" components and I'll make a decision.

Thanks everyone!

Until you will get adjusted to the new "norm", the new standard, and you will join the other army of people cursing because the train is 1minute late

A train or bus simply not showing up in Switzerland would be front page news for 2 weeks. It never happens. Here, you get an apology if the bus or train is two minutes delayed and if there is a serious, bigger issue leading to e.g. several trains not running at all, they will provide replacement transportation within the blink of an eye.

So it will indeed be nothing like Italy or London Anywhere in Switzerland that is.

Trains being cancelled does happen now and again on the Zurich - Lugano line. Geneva - Lausanne is not always free of problems either.

Re: Basel VS Zurich

First of all, as much as people point out differences, the difference between Zurich and Basel is the same as the difference between Kensington and Chelsea. Not that much to be honest. On a daily basis, the coop is a coop, the tram is a tram and the franc is a franc.

Zurich is a great city overall, probably the only thing that Switzerland has thats close to a big, European city. Lake is a definite advantage, although when weather is good, its overcrowded. Post-work life is more lively, better bars, restaurants, etc.
Basel is better from a tourism perspective. In less than 90 min. I can leave our house and pass security at the airport. Alsace is a spit away and shopping in Germany/France, definite plus is 10 min. away.

I live in Basel because I work in Basel and now we're used to it. If i was starting out in Switzerland, probably would have chosen Zurich simply because professionally there's more opportunities.

Ignore the hardcore comments from the both "parties" this is such a stupid fight which i never understood. Both cities are great, similar and at the same time different in their Swiss way.

Of course. But they do not just not show up with no alternative solution of sorts and no apology whatsoever.

Re: Basel VS Zurich

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned fog.

Basel: no fog. Sunny, mild winters; sunny, warm summers.

Zürich: clammy, interminable fog, or at least for months at a time. In the brief period when there is no fog (they call it "Sommer"), EVERYBODY goes to the lake so NOBODY can enjoy themselves. Of course, that's the only time you can see the lake. No wonder they go blowing up snowmen in a primitive attempt to banish winter.

Re: Basel VS Zurich

Yes that's true and I give you the weather, which is indeed somewhat better. Then again it's so not exactly a massive difference either.

Btw I'm not saying Basel is necessarily and always much worse, in general, than Zurich. It is suited for some people for sure. But not for OP amd what he is looking for, again since he does have the choice at this point.

1. Zurchers generally don't imagine Basel. They simply don't care about it at all... I know I never did before I had to go there once a week for my job. The only times Basel is mentioned is when the discussion is about Swiss football (and how it isn't up to international standards...).

2. This thread brought up the good and bad about both towns, but somehow do only Baslers get extremely defensive about their place... and quite emotional to make sure that Switzerland has "three major cities", which is... a bit cute.

3. Since this will only derail more if I do not praise Basel: I can honestly admit that the Döner Kebab is better in Basel than in Zürich. I recommend the Steinegrill.

Switzerland has "three major cities"
Switzerland has one 'major' city: Zurich.
Switzerland has various other cities and towns. One of the other cities is Basel.
