Anki Overdrive

I'm thinking about spoiling my 6 yo and getting an anki overdrive for christmas. https://www.anki.com/en-ca/overdrive. Basically a modern day scalextric/TCR, which I will probably enjoy too.

Does anyone have one? Any tips or advice? Is the starter set sufficient, or should we consider getting him some additional accessories?

Thanks in advance

Mace

I looked at the site. Aside from a great deal of hype, I didn't see a suggested age listed anywhere.

I think 6 is probably a bit young for that.

But daddy will be alright and lets face it, the 6 year old doesn't have a chance anyway

Re: Anki Overdrive

The support site recommends an age of 8.

I hadn't realized how much maintenance this thing required too. Wheels and track have to be kept free of dust, and need cleaning every 20 minutes of use!

Carrera digital is pretty high-tech (lane changing and overtaking) plus you get all the cool cars that actually exist.

Re: Anki Overdrive

This is an old thread, but we got this for our 6 year old and the whole family loves it. Even the 4 year old can do it and win.

Itís a pretty amazing toy. Really intelligent and the cars can move all over the track and pass each other. In addition to the starter pack, we got the collision intersection, which certainly added to the fun.

Note that the cars can shoot at each other with guns (depicted with lights on the cars and sound on the device (iPad etc.)), which I wasnít aware of initially and had some reservations about, but the kids think of it as shooting for points rather than shooting at another car with guns, so Iím ok with it now.

Cleaning of the track and car wheels is really important. If the track isnít clean the cars tend to go off the side a lot. That being said, we just keep a cloth on the side and wipe over periodically. It doesnít take much effort, but Iím not sure if the tracks will get worse with normal wear and tear. They are very thin.

One thing that might put some people off is that it takes about 10 mins to charge the cars and that charge only lasts for about 12 minutes. We donít mind too much, as we call it break time and it means our kids will eat something and take their eyes off a screen for a while, but if you want continuous play youíd need a second set of cars. The extra cars are really expensive, so itís something to bear in mind.
