Extremely high VAT tax on a UPS package - Beer

Hello,

I ordered some microbrew beers (8) from my favorite brewery in Denmark...which I do every few months, total cost is around 60 CHF with shipping.

The UPS guy delivered it to my door the other day demanding 79 CHF to be paid immediately rather than through the usual invoice delivered to my postbox by UPS. I sent my treasured brews back as Iím not in the money enough to pay that...

While Iím used to VAT that doesnít make sense, this just seems completely fishy to me...especially since Iíve ordered even more beer before and only paid around 28 CHF tax & through an invoice. How could the VAT be more than the actual sell price?

Do you agree? Thanks!

How do you know it was VAT? Could have been other charges. Have UPS changed their charging system? Have you queried it with UPS?

Must have been a lot of bottles or very strong beer to justify such prices.

Beer excise tax is max 33,76 rappen per liter.
Commercial Duty for Malt bottles is 13,- Chf. per 100Kg
Commercial Duty for mixed beers is 28,- Chf. per 100Kg
Beer under 18% is 5 Liters free and above that 2,- per liter
Beer above 18% is 1 Liter free and above that 15,- per liter
Normal VAT & Handlingcosts

Cannot think of anything else that might be related to bringing beer in the country.

Would indeed love to know which bottles he ordered.

What is the name of the beer? Maybe they export it elsewhere?
It must be worth trying if you are prepared to pay 60 chf for 8 litres or half litres.
Could you not get it posted to one of the border places in Germany or France using similar services like Europaketshop in Waldshut?
Then you just pick it up at your convenience for about 3-4 euros (plus cost of getting there and back)?

Thanks this is very helpful!

She, not he - i.e. moi, ordered no more than 7 liters and the strongest beer was 12% from Mikkeller in Denmark...I think something is up, I tried calling the number that the UPS gentleman gave me and it's a private number...perhaps this man is setting up a side skimming business. Handeling costs could not be 79 CHF!!

If you carry it across the border, not if you ship it.
