Looking for volunteering activities around Zurich

Hello charming people,
I am currently looking for volunteering activities around Zurich during weekday evenings / weekends. I have tried out Redcross, Heilsarmee, Room to Read etc, but unfortunately either they do not convene regularly or in the case of Redcross there were many a times more volunteers than needed. I was wondering if some of you can recommend me any regular opportunity for volunteering. I am open to do anything that does not involve speaking German (I only recently moved to ZRH from NE, so yet to learn German).

Thanks a lot!

Re: Looking for volunteering activities around Zurich

Perhaps you are better off looking for a Verein to join.
Then you can meet people and get a step up to helping other people in an established group within this Verein.

This is how it seems to work in Switzerland.
If you have a hobby or skill like fishing, dogs, music, after dinner speaking etc and can get "accepted", then lots of doors start to open. Never happened to me.
Never tried.
My English friend swears by them - but he speaks good Swiss German.
Also, some volunteer jobs have issues about insurance - which is why they are almost like a real job.

Not as simple as back home. Pity.
Just found this link
https://www.englishforum.ch/daily-li...ins-clubs.html

Maybe volunteer for the local fire service? (after the German gets better)

If you are a dog person then maybe see if the local refuges could use some help - feeding, walking, playtime.

Re: Looking for volunteering activities around Zurich

as mentioned, swissvolunteers for sport related events, otherwise more socially engaged www.benevol-jobs.ch also for regular activities, what I also often do is when I see an event that I am interested in go check the website, most of them have a Helfer/Volunteer page with info how to apply.
I ve volunteered at quite a lot of events like this.

Thank you. I tried writing to some of them, but they never responded so far. Maybe it is my wretched luck. Could you recommend me some institutions that you have volunteered for where I can normally expect a reply?

Re: Looking for volunteering activities around Zurich

Are you volunteering for charity to do a good deed or to keep yourself busy?

Theres plenty of volunteering opportunities for the various events going on around town. Music events, exhibitions, sports events. Just drop the organisers a message if they dont have a volunteers page on the web site, explain your situation and see if they are interested to offer you something.

In the past I have done music festivals, airshow, tennis tournament, couldnt make the show jumping but was offered.

Either.. Good deed or keeping oneself busy either can be the objective.. Both in one will be ideal (but am not too picky). I do not know how strange it will be to see a poster about some music festival in the train station and then mail them for a volunteering opportunity?

Re: Looking for volunteering activities around Zurich

Not strange at all. And if it's a big event they will have a dedicated volunteering information page. For example im sure the lauberhorn ski race needs hundreds and there's info on this. When I had a period of volunteering I basically chose events I wanted to do then got in contact.

Re: Looking for volunteering activities around Zurich

Would you also be interested in helping private individuals?
For example accompanying someone who needs to go shopping, or running errands on their behalf, or taking down the curtains to wash them, or helping someone sort out their cellar?
If so, you might like to contact https://www.nachbarschaftshilfe.ch/
Nachbar-schaft = neighbour-hood
Hilfe = help.

They mix and match local, private people who are looking for a helper with those who can offer a few hours, a bit of energy and a kind attitude.

Thank you! The problem with these nachbarschaftshilfe is that I do not speak any German (wish I could).. That is why I am very hesitant to write to these ads.. Have you had any experience with it? Will the language barrier be a problem in finding some opportunities (I know the opportunities will be limited, but at least a few would be nice)?

Re: Looking for volunteering activities around Zurich

From the Zürich city website page on volunteer opportunities, here are ideas on where to look for volunteer jobs for English speakers:

https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/sd/de/i...genarbeit.html

Click on the link 'Volunteering opportunities for English-speaking people in Zürich' for a .pdf with ideas and further links.
