Small Gift Ideas from United States

We will be visiting family in Switzerland, coming from the United States. We wish to bring them some small gift (small enough and light enough to fit into our already crammed suitcases) that perhaps they could only get from the United States? Is there anything you would recommend?

Re: Small Gift Ideas from United States

Hmm.... Of course it all depends what your hosts in Switzerland like but here are a few things that we usually bring for ourselves from the US as we can't get them here:
- good peanut butter
- maple sirup
- chocolate chips (good for baking)

I wouldn't bring any chocolate. No offence but American chocolate can't compete with the Swiss one.

Thank you for the recommendations! (Don't worry, I wouldn't have dared to bring chocolate! haha )

That is a good idea! Could get a bit pricy and hard to pack... but I will keep this on the possibility list!

Re: Small Gift Ideas from United States

Who is "them"?

New Skittles (yellow) would be welcome in our family. Wintergreen and cinnamon Altoids.

I'd like an issue of American Affairs Journal and a good frizbee.

But "them" will have different preferences.

The Cali wine suggestion is true, will never forget a Napa wine course I took there. A book on Cali vinyards history might be appreciated. And a film called Sideways.

Along that line, my kids at least love real Jelly Beans and I know you can get them here but there are many more varieties in the U.S. with some nicely packed selections.

Cheap and light to carry

Beef Jerky. You can sneak a few packs in your luggage, although officially is not allowed..
OK, bad advice.

OP, truth is you can find almost everything here but they're not quite the same...bring anything deemed "true American" and it'll be fine.

Oh, and some Burt's Bees natural cosmetics could be an option. They are excellent and I don't find other things than lip balm here.
Or Bath&Body Works, especially their Aromatherapy products => never seen them in Switzerland. Just suggestions.

Re: Small Gift Ideas from United States

Depends on who your family are, I suppose, and what they like.

Whenever I visit the US I bring back a selection of local craft beers for friends.

There's also quite a lot of stuff in the candy and sweets department that doesn't really have equivalents here. On the other hand, if your family don't know that stuff they might not apprecaite it. So again, it depends on who they are, how well they know the US etc.

Another original and inexpensive present is shot glasses. In touristy shops in the US you get loads of different ones with the name and badge of your city or state or some local attraction or famous person or sports team or national park or maybe even something naughty or funny emblazoned on them. Some are a bit kitschy but other are really artistic or cool. The nice thing is that once you start colecting you can just keep on going on because there are so many.
