Cat Crazy! Need help finding vet in Zurich

HI
We moved here just about a month ago with our two cats. The girl has not been fixed yet and has recently gone into heat. It is the worst we have ever heard.
So I called the animal hospital and the animal protection people and (no small feat with no phone or phonebook!) they referred me to the same vet, who incidentally can't see us til the 29th, albeit at a decent price of 210 CHF.
Do any long timers here know if there is something similar to the SPCA's discount spay/neuter program? (we are on a low budget)
Or does anybody know of a vet nearby, in the city? ( we are in Kreis 6)
I tried looking up the Swiss Wiki on the matter but it didn't seem like any of the docs posted were in Zurich.
Incidentally, does anybody have a home remedy for caterwauling, short of the obvious, so we can sleep through the night the nextfew days?
Thanks so much in advance for your help.
Cheers
Leyla

The vet we use it well outside of the city, my wife used to use one in Altstetten if you want I can get her to post the address?

Not sure about dicount vets, my experience with three cats is that they are damn expensive!

CHF 210 is a very decent price I would say. If memory serves having our cat spayed was around 350 a coupole of years ago

I don't know of a vet in Zurich, but perhaps Feliway spray might help? Although that you only can also get from a vet here, not from the store.

Our only experience with a cat in heat was to let her ride it out - and get her fixed ASAP. Even if you had the cash, you'd still have to let her go through the heat first before she could be spayed.

You might want to try the Swiss Animal Protection agency - they may be able to refer to you a lower cost spay/neuter vet or clinic near you. I remember it being impossible to find one when we had ours fixed and it cost about what you were quoted. Girls, of course, cost more since it is a more invasive surgery.

Re: Cat Crazy! Need help finding vet in Zurich

Hi,

I've taken my two monsters to a small time doctor who's been in practise for 40 years. He answers his own phone and I'm not sure how his english is:

Dr. med. vet. Karl Hartmann
Winterthurerstrasse 72, 8006 Zürich/ZH
044 361 49 49

He is in Kreis 6 - letzistrasse tram stop.

In kreis 6 there's also:

Klein Tierklinik: http://www.klein-tierklinik.ch/

Phone: 044 361 5511; Spyristrasse 8, 8044 Zurich

Re: Cat Crazy! Need help finding vet in Zurich

Hey Guys!!!
Thanks so much for your replies, and especially to Nanda for that suggestion. I will definitely try calling to see if he can help us, especially seeing as he is around the corner.
Yeah, I was happy with the price quoted too.
I have decided to go zen or try, and hear the Infinite Void in my cat's voice

Letting her out for a spin is not an option; we just had kittens this summer and just barely found good homes for them the day before we moved out.
Cheers and thanks again!
L.

Re: Cat Crazy! Need help finding vet in Zurich

My sister is working as an apprentice for a vet in Birmensdorf and she said they charge between 210 and 280 depending on what needs to be done. So looks like you've been quoted a good price.

Cats going mental is such a pain, hope she'll have calmed down a bit by now...

Anyone know of a good vet?

I am getting ready to take my cat back to the US and I need to get a rabies shot for him, and probably a health check up and hopefully a mild sedative like he had on the flight over here. I was hoping someone would know of a good and reasonably priced vet in zumikon or zurich who speaks english?

Hey Mandy,

First, the regulations for importing cats in the US vary by state, but generally proof of rabies vaccination is not required (nor is a general health check). Anyway, our vet is great, though not close to zumikon (and his receptionist does not speak English). His practice is Kleintierpraxis Letzi in Altstetten (044-405-9000).

Also, remember not to fly through Great Britan!

Re: Cat Crazy! Need help finding vet in Zurich

The two best vets I've been to (pretty much in the world btw) are Dr. (Mr. & Mrs) Schröter and the Tierspital.

Re: Cat Crazy! Need help finding vet in Zurich

The Tierspital in Kreis 6 just took care of the neutering of my cat (male).

I was quite surprised that it only cost CHF122. Not to mention that he was baby(cat)sat from 8am to 5pm
