Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

It's my wife's birthday in a couple of weeks & I want to take her somewhere special for a second Honeymoon long weekend. I don't want to fly & 2 hours by car is probably enough of a journey for me.

I have ruled out Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons as a nice room is £1500 a night for bed & breakfast, to put that in perspective Claridge's is less than half the price.

Thanking you all in advance

I love Oakley Court, near Windsor. https://www.oakleycourt.co.uk/
And lots of clients have recommended the Elvetham https://www.elvethamhotel.co.uk/

Re: Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

Interestingly, for location, the Monopoly board used to be a good guide. The less salubrious areas were brown coloured (Old Kent Road etc.) and the nicest royal blue (Park Lane, Mayfair). In my time, I have owned hotels in both these areas. Other than that, I'm afraid I can't help. My wife enjoys hotel stays. I'd prefer a stay in a Swiss Alpine Club hut (maybe though a bit later in the year).
Anyway, good that you are on your feet again.

Re: Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

How about a Champneys resort Spa break. Three of the ones in the link are within driving distance of London and ladies seem to enjoy the pampering (as long as they have good wifi/4G I'm golden too).

Re: Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

You could try the New Forest Chewton Glen Hotel. You're about a 2 hour drive from Heathrow, I reckon.. less depending on traffic.
The hotel has tree house luxurious suites apparently, though I have never been.. the last tree house hotel I stayed in was in Kenya, a much grubbier version

Another is The Mill at Gordleton, a smaller hotel in the New Forest and a lovely spot - the food is wonderful.

Hambleton Hall on Rutland Water - fabulous, near Oakham- part of Relais and Châteaux:

https://youtu.be/Mqv8SVQjF0U

Rutland is as pretty as the Cotswolds - mellow stone buildings and stony slate roofs- gorgeous landscape and lovely towns like Oakham, Uppingham, Oundle, And Stamford- but without the tourists. Lovely pubs too, including nearby Michelin * The Olive Branch (which has its own B&B too). Could stay at cheaper Barnsdale Lodge, or Barndale Hall which also has fabulous views of the water, great gardens and some easily accessible rooms and studios (make sure you ask for such)- and go for lunch or dinner at the Hall.

Alpinedreamer has no particular reputation at present
Re: Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

Hartwell house is lovely - beautiful grounds and quite 'stately' - it has a Spa and good restaurant. Service has always been very good.

https://www.hartwell-house.com

Or for something a little less formal but I would say more cosy is 'The Nags Head' in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. Food is very good and service fantastic. Open fireplace and quirky rooms! Great Missenden is a lovely little village (main train line from London Marylebone) in the Chilterns (I am biased as I live there!!)

(sorry still have to learn how to add a link!)

Happy Anniversary!

Re: Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

Thanks for all the input, I had mispriced Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, so we are going there for 1 night with dinner & 2 nights at Dansfield house hotel & spar.

Looking forward to report back - kids said they would buy me a night at the 4 Saison for my 70th- and 1 night at the St Pancras Renaissance

BTW, for anyone interested in Rutland, just down from Hambleton Manor, is a great gastro pup with lovely rooms, also overlooking lake- called the Fynches Arms- a great combination.

It was on the short list, my wife had no interest in a London Hotel.
She did once stay at the Savoy with an ex, there was a room mix up due to the same surname. They got the best suite & chauffer driven car SAV 1. No doubt the other person was really pissed off

I have to say the wine list is somewhat disappointing.

My wife only drinks white & was hoping for a Sancerre or Pouilly fumé.

Re: Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

Fond of a Pouilly Fuissé - didn't know about the 'fumé' - interesting.

Raymond Blanc comes from Franche-Comté, near Besançon not far from here- so more of a Vin du Jura, Bourgogne man.

The family of one of my husband's colleagues when we lived in France had a vineyard and produced Pouilly Fumé. It is a very drinkable wine and we got a lot of freebies in those days.

Re: Fabulous Hotel within 2 hours London

Last Tuesday we stayed at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, whilst the hotel was amazing the food in the restaurant was a huge disappointment. The fish had a strong smell & was clearly not fresh, left over from the previous week. I was amazed to see salt & pepper on the table, even more surprised that they were the cheapest plastic ones money can buy no doubt from Poundland. If it had not been my wife's birthday I would have sent back 3 of the 7 courses, the taste was bland & boring. I have never had a bad meal at a Michelin stared restaurant before. The service was nothing special 4 waiters for the whole dining room, I would have expected 8 or more. All in all a waste of £1325.00

Wednesday & Thursday was spent at Danesfield House & Spar, which was amazing. They did try & palm us off with a room with a cracked window & a 1m2 hardboard fixed hole in the ceiling, the replacement room was excellent. The restaurant was fabulous & would recommend it to anyone. Thank you, Blueangel for the best hotel link
