Where to find a stola

So, for the weird question of day:

Where does one find a stola in this day and age?

I'm not talking about a shawl. I'm talking about the good old fashion Roman Matron kind of stola.

I'm not that versatile with the sewing machine to try to make it myself. And I am not sure where to turn to start my search... I'm not sure this is something I would find in the Fastnacht kind of attire...

Thanks for any tips.

Re: Where to find a stola

May I piggy-back onto your request?

I'm looking for a good quality silk wrap (i.e., stola.) to wear with an evening dress. I can't find anything online, and being allergic to shopping I have no idea where to start.

(I could make one, but I can't find any decent silk fabric here (ZH, ZG, SZ area) that is not in garish neon or 'Oma's curtains' colors.)

All suggestions most appreciated.

Re: Where to find a stola

The best option I can think of is the ethnic stalls/markets at Zürich HB and other locations.
They might have some variations of the Roman version which might fit as well.
A "Shawl" or a "Stoll" for instance.

Re: Where to find a stola

I've seen a couple of them in the Manor, but as always, very "blumeli"... I think your best chance for something a little more fashionable and less oma might be Jelmoli.

If you can't find one, I can lend you my silver grey one - but it's rather simple, uniform grey colour, with a pattern made by "pulling" a line (I have no idea how this is called, I am sorry, I suck at clothing nomenclature). As far as I remember, you are on the other side of the lake, so should be easy enough

Been looking in Amazon for roman costumes, but I'm actually getting only Greek barbarisms, or "sexy goddess" made of satin... Meh... You can find a 15th century dress at any market, but something a little less modern is suddenly too hispter to find... PFFFFT!

Is this for costuming or for formal attire ?

I have a friend in Zurich who makes historical costumes... if you want to make contact, let me know.

For formal attire, you could try the nepalese pashmina/silk shop near Enge:

Pukar Collection: https://www.pukarcollection.ch/de/

The man who runs the shop is very friendly, and he supports a school in Nepal.

No exactly. A toga was a male exclusive attire. The only women who wore togas were forced to do so because they did something unspeakable (like being divorced because of adultery).

I mean a female roman tunica. Something passable as historically correct, less sexy halloween costume.

Please be super careful while buying Cashmere or Pashmina. There is way too many rip-off merchants selling you just semi or one thread stuff (One thread out of many is pashmina, rest is something else) and claiming it to be 100%.
And the prices!!!

An easy test for pashmina : The entire garment should easily pass through a ring.

Costuming. Don't judge

Would your friend charge an arm and a leg for it? It doesn't need to be perfect...

Yeah, I looked in this one. Same thing that is available in Amazon: basically satin shinny short dresses for halloween orgies, I guess...

There we go, I can already see myself this evening getting my shawls stuck in my wedding ring... Now you got me curious!
