86000 Franc/year for a single person in Zürich

Hello everyone!
I am moving to Zürich in March for a job.
I am a single person and my salary will be 86000 Franc/year.
What kind of a life would it give me? I am okay with living in a shared flat.

Greetings and thanks in advance!

Evren

Welcome to the forum.

You'll be earning well over the national average for a family with kids, and in a shared flat you'll be very comfortably off. But of course it depends what you're used to and what you expect from life.

Clearly below the Swiss poverty line!

See: https://www.englishforum.ch/daily-li...s-chf200k.html

No self respecting expat would accept such a salary! Ask for more and stop all the expat price dumping!

Re: 86000 Franc/year for a single person in Zürich

The median in Switzerland in 2016 was around Fr. 6'500 per month (so Fr. 78'000 per year). Source: https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/de/home...l.6369348.html

This means that half of the people earn less than that, and half of them earn more. You'll be in the half that makes more...10% more.

You'll have a good standard of living. No luxuries perhaps, but you'll be able to afford to save a decent % of your yearly income.

Re: 86000 Franc/year for a single person in Zürich

Look at cost of accommodation, it's expensive in Zurich you could easily spend 1/3 of your salary on accommodation unless you want a tiny studio or shared flat.

1000-2500 a month rent has the least available supply so not easy for someone just arriving.

Re: 86000 Franc/year for a single person in Zürich

Thanks everyone for all the ideas!
I am expecting to get promoted quickly with a %20-30 salary increase as I spoke with my boss. So to say this is just for starting "fuß fassen"!
I will be okay with sharing a flat with other expats at the beginning by which I am targeting to save some money as well.
I dont have a luxury life style. Maybe 3-4 beers at weekends in a bar and once a week dining outside. I like to cook at home as well. Under these circumstances, I hope to live well on this salary.

Any tips when it comes to finding shared flat and accomodations?

Greetings

Evren

Yes, I checked the shared flats which are between 700 and 1000 Francs. I had a look at the 1+0 Studio flats which are around 1500. so 86000F/year sounded reasonable.

Re: 86000 Franc/year for a single person in Zürich

You will be fine.

You're expectations are reasonable (but I doubt that you would need a shared flat). The EF 120k minimum is not a good benchmark.

Here the latest link to average Swiss salaries - apologies but you will need to use Google translate:

As a single bloke I had a whale of a time on quite a lot less than that - and a 5 room flat all to myself.

You'll be fine.

Thank you for your helpful and motivating message. When it comes to sharing a flat, do you mean that I will not need a shared flat?

Have you checked at www.roomster.com? I have seen several every time I checked for my daughter while she was applying at some apprenticeships in the city.

Männedorf, on the Gold Coast. I paid a little over 2k a month for it.

Not a lot of girls in your village?

Um, maybe that belongs in the "Repertoire of terrible jokes" thread. Sorry.

As a general rule of thumb, if you apply for a flat your rental application is generally in the running if your monthly income covers one third of the monthly rent. I believe that you are eligible for this.

I'm open to correction, however this has been my both my recent and over years experience with friends, family and colleagues.

Whether you go for a shared flat (nothing wrong with that) or something else you can afford within this limit is entirely up to you. Just be aware that the more affordable flats are highly competitive within Zurich, so you might need to expand the horizons on where you live in Zurich if you want your own flat i.e. it's unlikely to be central Zurich. But there are plenty of alternatives.
