Moving from Basel stadt to Basel land

Hello,

I did not find a more relevant section to put this, so I post it here.

We are a family of three, recently had our newborn, and we are now looking for a bigger flat. We currently live in Basel stadt, but we are looking at the broader area, so there is a chance that we move to Basel land.

I know that you can save some money on the tax and the health insurance costs are a bit lower, but I was also trying to roughly measure some other differences. So I'll post here some questions, and whoever has similar experience or knows something can answer

1) Apparently, prämienverbilligung is different between the two cantons, so does anybody know if there is an online tool (like comparis) where I can compute the potential discount for 2019? I know that the tables are explanatory but I do not know if the values mentioned there are before or after tax (probably net income?)?

2) Are there any similar tables (like prämienverbilligung) for the childcare subsidies in the two cantons? Unfortunately, I could not find anything.

3) It seems that the family allowances is a federal-regulated thing taken care by the employer so that does not change (https://www.ch.ch/en/family-allowances/).

4) Are other hidden differences possibly detected from people that went through the same thing? Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks for the help

3) The amoung of family allowance can be varied by the canton. 200/250 a month is the minimum. As it says in the link you provided. BL pays 200/250.

My son and his wife recently moved from BS to BL. (A matter of 500m!). They have one young child. Overall, they've experienced a slight reduction in costs.

Rubbish disposal may be more or less expensive, depending where you move to. Some other insurances are likely to have different premiums - e.g. car, home contents. Otherwise I can't really think of any hidden extras.

Re: Moving from Basel stadt to Basel land

Hi NotAllThere,

thanks for replying. Yes, the family allowance can vary per canton, but only slightly. Most of them have the same (200/250) and Basel-stadt and Basel-land have exactly the same too.

When I used comparis with my specifications (income and family of three), I got around 12000 chf reduction in tax per year and around 1200 reduction in health insurance cost per year. I wouldn't say that is slightly, but rather a significant difference. Unless I did something wrong in the computation .

In general, all other things (car, rubbish bags) would affect the costs slightly. What I worry about is the childcare costs. Does anybody know if there are some tables (like in prämienverbilligung), where you can compute your childcare subsidies according to your income, for both cantons (stadt and land)? I guess that is the highest cost I can think of right now.

Re: Moving from Basel stadt to Basel land

What I meant was that when ALL their income and outgoing were considered, they were slightly better off. This include higher accommodation costs. Otherwise, it would have been ~6000 a year better off.

They did say something about various child related subsidies. So far as I can tell, this is a BS thing. Not found in BL.

BL count some shares capital value at a reduced level to their actual value. You can also open a savings account with BLKB for buying/building a house in BL, Up to 24'000 per married couple, per year. It's tax deductable. If you don't buy/build a house, then naturally you have to pay the tax back.

Re: Moving from Basel stadt to Basel land

Thanks. It is true that accommodation is often more expensive in BL for the same type of house.

If somebody knows where the reduction for childcare are mentioned in Basel stadt, that would be very helpful.

Re: Moving from Basel stadt to Basel land

Currently trying to compare taxes through comparis and wanted to cross-check with you. There are two links there:

(1) https://en.comparis.ch/steuern/quell...echner/default

(2) https://en.comparis.ch/steuern/steuervergleich/default

Is there any differences between the withholding tax (1) and the Tax calculator for municipal, cantonal and federal taxes (2)?

Also (1) is asking for gross income, whereas (2) asks for netto income. I guess the difference is that in netto you should exclude already AHV, UI etc. before putting the number there? (isn't it strange to ask for netto given that the tax has not been deducted yet?)
