Armed officers weren't allowed to shoot the drones down today, because if they miss, they cannot be sure where the bullets will land.
Not sure that makes sense.

If they hit they can't be sure where the bullet will land either, only it is more likely to be deflected increasing the number of places it could land.

Also, if they hit they also don't know where the debris will land either.

So if they're genuinely concerned about where stuff will end up, surely hitting is worse than missing.

A drone, even a professional one is hardly a flying tank. They are fragile AF. They could probably shoot it with bird shot from a few hundred meters .. With that sort of upward trajectory and small projectiles, it wouldn't hurt anything when it came back down. Plus it's flying over the airport runway, wtf is it going to land on.

I would guess that installing radio jamming technology at an airport would be a little more tricky.

Seems fishy, I mean it's quite a large area around the airport but it's flat uninhabited land, not exactly an urban jungle with a million hiding places./tinfoilhat

Hope the "pilot" saved up some money - tons of it actually - or s/he'll know what to spend the rest of the life working for.

Not that uninhabited really.

I wonder, what is the radio range of these things?

- a typical drone has a flight time of only a few minutes. Lets assume the ones used are at the upper end of the scale and fly 30 mins at the time. Within that time does it have to get to the airport, annoy everyone and return. Charging takes much more time than the flight time. So in order to lock down an airport do you not need a drone, you need at least a dozen of them. They aren't cheap, at least not the larger ones that can fly longer... multiple of them is a price range that takes quite some beer money to get.

- I would assume that whoever is behind this knows that the cops will be after them in no time. Radio signals can be triangulated. So nobody in his right mind would actually control that drone - you preprogram the flight path and let it go autonomously... or risk detection. That way can you let it land somewhere and pick it up once you know the cops didn't follow. Use another drone in the meantime to keep them busy.

I hope there is more to the story than some kid with a toy... otherwise this would be the overreaction of the century. I guess the cops don't tell what they actually are after.
