Luton Airport to Gatwick Airport

Hi,
Has anyone ever travelled by train from Luton airport to Gatwick airport? How easy is this? Is the stain station in the airport? My 15 year old son has to do this in a couple of weeks and I would like to map out his journey for him a bit.
Thanks.

Re: Luton Airport to Gatwick Airport

At Luton airport he takes the shuttle bus down the hill to the airport (Parkway I think) train station. There are some trains that go direct to Gatwick airport, takes about 80 mins. He should avoid taking one where he needs to change in central London.

He'll be fine!

Re: Luton Airport to Gatwick Airport

Hi

ThamesLink train from Luton Airport Parkway direct to Gatwick Airport, it arrives Gatwick South.

if he needs Gatwick North, there is inside the airport a shuttle back and forth between South and North.

At Luton airport, he needs to get the special bus to the Luton Airport Parkway, it think it is every 10 minutes, takes around 15 minutes and stops outside the train station. Cost about £2 for the bus unless it added to the train ticket, person is there to collect the bus fare.

look at British Rail for train times

Used to be an excellent service, but in 2018, they changed the timetables and has been a bit of a nightmare for some this year.

I have sometimes changed at Blackfriars station, seems I always stayed on same platform for the connection, that was usually in 5 to 10 minutes.

Train is the best way to travel between Luton & Gatwick, as it crosses through London.

Re: Luton Airport to Gatwick Airport

So....

In theory it is super easy. Thameslink is the train and its direct, Luton to Gatwick. Now Luton airport, the train station isnt at the airport its a bus ride away, but from the train station it will drop you directly at Gatwick airport.

My experience with Gatwick is its a disgrace. The airport itself is very nice but impossible to get to. The infrastructure to get there always has an issue. Its very bad.

So the alternatives to trains to get there, are a national express bus/coach, which takes about 3 hours I think and is maybe 30 pound. Or, a taxi. And Luton is very good for taxis and they are well priced. So luton to Gatwick in a taxi should be about 90 quid

The train from Luton Parkway to Brighton is the direct service (no changes) to Gatwick.

My impression has laways been the precise opposite. the infrastructure at Gatwick is ill designed, ugly, ageing badly and only barely suited for purpose.. The ceilings are low, the carpets wearing thin, the walls scuffed, lifts and escalators often broken and daylight is scarce. It can feel bizzarely soviet at times. But the really great plus about Gatwick is that it is easy to get to thanks to having direct train services to loads of places, probably more than any other UK airport.

Oh yes, and the staff are for the most par friendlier than they are at,say, Heathrow.

Re: Luton Airport to Gatwick Airport

I used to live in Harpenden.. Which is on the line between Luton and Gatwick.

Quite a few times, after a night on the beer I'd get on that train and fall asleep immediately..
Then wake up in Luton.
Say oh bugger, then fall asleep again
Then wake up in Gatwick.
and repeat.. many times.

Spot on! I was considering writing something similar. How Gatwick thought that it might have a second runway* when they can barely cope with the existing traffic is beyond me.

* I believe the dream's not quite dead - with part-time use of a taxi-way as a runway being considered.

Isn't there a taxiway that is actually passed for use as a runway when the main runway is closed for maintenance?

Yes that's it. There's a discussion about it here on pprune:
LGW second runway "by the back door" going ahead

If it is a co-ordinated disruption.. They have certainly proved just how easy and effective it is..

Expect a lot more coming soon.

business secret.

Definitely a new gap in the market. If slammer has an idea, we could do crowdfunding on EF.

Armed officers weren't allowed to shoot the drones down today, because if they miss, they cannot be sure where the bullets will land.

After today, I predict substantial new funding materialises for UK airport drone defences.

Re: Luton Airport to Gatwick Airport

I am driving from Basel to UK early (like 6am) tomorrow (Friday 21st) with three (currently) empty seats - albeit with a stop somewhere on route for some cheese and wine and things in France. Tunnel, then Cambridge via South London (but obviously can drop at any sensible station as well).
I know Easyjet has cancelled several LGW flights today - so if maybe we can get one or two Christmas plans back on track that will be good.
Need to arrange before 22.00 tonight (Thursday) if going to happen - PM me on here or on one of the two French fora where I have put same offer.
