Tick Bite - doctors or not?

So last night before bed I noticed a large tick on the underneath of my forearm.
I was alone (except for sleeping kids) so I had to try and remove it by myself which was difficult as I'm not left handed, anyway I messed it up and a part of it remained I "tried" to get the rest out but just ended up gauging myself worse.
Now Have a little scab where i messed around with it and its saw and red.

Question : Do I go to the doctors? I don't want to be be that panicky foreigner annoying the doctor about a tick bite but there are a lot of scare stories on the net....

I have removed loads from my kids with no problems but they have all had the tick injection and I have not.

I think it must have come inside from my cat has I had on a thick jumper all day, and I've not been outside...

Even if the tick isn't carrying any of the nasty diseases they are famous for, the fact that there's a bit of it left in the wound means it could get infected. Best to get it checked out and cleaned up properly.

Re: Tick Bite - doctors or not?

My doctor says to watch it and if the red bit gets bigger, go see him.

But if there is a bit left, it must be taken out. You could pass by a pharmacy, have it taken out and get advice.

Do you have the shots (the ones one can get, anyway)?

Re: Tick Bite - doctors or not?

doctor ? The one time I found a tick on me I ran straight to the hospital emergency room where they took it out and gave me tetanus shots. They also told me to keep an eye to make sure it does not form a red ring.

Re: Tick Bite - doctors or not?

I called the doctor. They said its not infected, call them if I get a fever or it gets bigger.

Ill just keep an eye on it. ButI think ill get the injection anyway - presumably adults can also have it?

Thanks for the advice

You won't be the panicky foreigner, it's quite common and happened to me last year. So just go to the doctor. Lyme disease would be a lot worse!
Edit to add: I had the tell tale 'bullseye' on my arm, so the doctor had no hesitation in giving me a prescription.

Yes of course adults can. It's three shots, after that, one every ten years.

Still same procedure when you get bitten, keep an eye on it, see a doctor if it gets bigger.

Re: Tick Bite - doctors or not?

There are two main risks with a tick bite: Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis.

You can vaccinate against encephalitis, which is recommended in most parts of Switzerland as there around 4% of ticks in Switzerland carry the disease. The vaccination is a series of three shots spread over six months.

Lyme disease is the other big worry. If you've been bitten by a tick, monitor the site for signs of redness -- particularly, if you develop the characteristic bulls-eye rash that is unique to Lyme. Treatment for Lyme disease is straight-forward if caught early -- typically 14-21 days of antibiotics.
