Need a good English speaking hair color specialist in Zurich!

Hello Everyone

I have been living in Zurich for about 5 years and have not had any luck finding an English speaking hair color specialist. I've been to three different stylists in Zurich and have not been very satisfied.

I know it's not just me, because I love my stylist in the US. She uses three different types of color - 2 colors and a bleach and she weaves super tight so it looks natural and not chunky.

Most stylists I've been to here are too chunky or the color fades in about two weeks. Yes, I've been vocal about what I want - but have yet to get it! I am absolutely willing to pay a few hundred CHF if the color lasts and looks good.

If any of you out there are blonde, get regular highlights and love your stylist (and he/she speaks English), I would love to know who they are!

THANKS!

Hi!

It is a bit of a train ride between Basel and Zürich, but if you don't mind that - trains go back and forth very often! - I can really recommend Barryinc here on the EnglishForum. I was there a couple of weeks ago for a cut and color and still very happy with it!

Check out the thread Hairstylist Basel 20 years experience

I go to Heidi at Bruno Mathes, Gartenstrasse near Stockerstrasse. She speaks English.

However you are right about the chunky colour... maybe you need to specify that you want more colours. I certainly will next time.

I was very happy the first time I went, the next time (recently) I'd thought about going darker but it is too dark! So that might be my fault - wouldn't blame the salon.

Thanks all for the advice. I'm quite tempted to try Barry in Basel - he seems to get awesome reviews!

Hubbie and I are both due for an appt, so will check him out and let you know!

Thanks!

Re: Need a good English speaking hair color specialist in Zurich!

Have you tried or heard of Zelo in Seefeld in Zürich?
I've been going there since we arrived in Switzerland and they're pretty good. Most of the people working there also speak pretty good English.

I do have blond hair but it's usually trimmed to a velcro-like appearance and I've not tried highlighting.
Cheers

Re: Need a good English speaking hair color specialist in Zurich!

I definitely reccommend Barry!!!!

He is a fantastic hair-dresser and has worked wonders with my hair, he has a huge amount of experience and is fantastically professional.

Also, my boyfriend was even impressed with him (my boyfriend has hair longer than mine and in a condition I would KILL for) and he doesn't really get impressed very easily.

Good luck with him, it really is worth the trip, he's just opened a new salon, and I hear it looks fantastic, I haven't had a chance to check out the new pad yet!

All the best,

C

Natasha

If you are looking for someone who has been recommended to me for a cut and color - I would try Alex at The Londoner:

http://www.thelondoner.ch/eng/e_index.html

He's in Kloten which isn't Zurich city, but it's also not Basel .

My friend is a brunette and just got a full color - no highlights and it looked good. She also raved about the cut - he took his time and it did look good. I'm looking for highlights though, so will give Barry a try!

Hi,

In Zurich I can reccomend Eddine Belaid in Alfred-Escherstrasse 23.

He uses Aveda products which are my favorite!

I second that. Barry really is great. I live in ZH too but don't mind the train ride to Basel. He's good company and fills you in on all the goss, you can have a glass of wine and relax and the best part is you get to leave the salon with fabulous hair!

Its only a few tram stops (5 mins or so) from Basel main station so its not too far out of the way and is easy to find.

Assuming we are talking about for hairdressing then I am incredulous at the all-in cost of your hairdo. A couple of hours travel, cost of travel plus fee...totals what ? And all for someone to stick some cochineal in your hair ?

I can highly recommend Vanessa at EnVogue on the corner of Seefeldstrasses and Mainaustrasse.

She speaks excellent English and she does a wonderful job on my highlights. I have been going to her for over 2 years now - such a nice person.

I am incredulous at the time and effort spent travelling to an english-speaking hair-dresser rather than try to pick up the local language.

Hairdressing is a simple cut and dry- what we are talk about is colouring; to find someone that is not only knowledgeable about hair but also understands what the client wants is a rarety.

Coming out of the salon, not only do I look good, but I have also spent a few hours enjoying myself. Is it worth the time and money? Yes, absolutely.

I also appreciate that I am no longer redecorating my bathroom with Clairol #6, missing most of the back of my head, screaming at the puppy that got in and wants her hair coloured too... all to end up with a multitude of shades that just looks hideous.

The op asked for an "English speaking hair color specialist" and we are answering her question. If I wanted to go "local" and wanted a good job done- then I better start those Italian lessons, because that is what they speak in the salon closest to me. Yet, I live in a predominently French speaking neighbourhood and all this is in canton Zh where they speak?

Women have a special relationship with their hairdresser and those of us who have "found someone" are absolutley devoted to them... it might sound silly, but that is the way it is.

Re: Need a good English speaking hair color specialist in Zurich!

I am not even going to explain why I'm willing to pay and take the time to get what I want out of a good haircut. I was asking for advise, not criticism!

I have tried EnVogue in Seefeld (and it was even in english/german) - but can't remember her name. 1 - it was close to 400 CHF and 2 - she told me AFTER that she only used color (NO BLEACH), which means it all washed out in about a month!

Re: Need a good English speaking hair color specialist in Zurich!

My barnet is sorted in London (which I visit regularly for my monthly dose of stimulation and cultural and retail excitement) for a mere 6GBP (about 12CHF).
It is done by Topper cuts at the top of Charing Cross Rd in cental London, and it is staffed by a team of primarily Polish hairdressers that do a great job.

Last time I had my hair cut in Zürich it cost me 56CHF, and that was without any cheeky-chappy banter or being asked how my holidays went.

The end result is pretty good, and I have people coming up to me in the street, twirling their fingers theatrically, pointing and saying : "Like your style!". That, my friends, is why I do what I do...
