Another Laptop Keyboard thread

My laptop is on the way out and I need a replacement ASAP. Local shops have half the keys in the wrong places and a bunch of weird letters that I will never use. Yes I can type without looking but I don't like seeing the keys in the wrong places.

I did a quick search and some threads from 2007 which mentioned that dell.ch has some options. I didn't find it on the site. Do they still do this?

I have a german and swiss shipping address.

On dell webiste and also on lenovo one you can order one with US keyboard (but not all models!), also are you looking for a new one or second hand one?

Pick something from here and have it delivered to your German address.

Good luck then
Nowadays many eBay (.com or .co.uk) sellers ship to Switzerland for a price of around 50 CHF, all duties included (check for International Priority Shipping). This also works for non-new ones.

Re: Another Laptop Keyboard thread

Google your laptop model and "keyboard replacement". If you have access to an EU shipping address your only problem is finding the replacement.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but if you don't feel completely at home with QWERTZ keyboards I recommend buying laptops abroad, in the country that best suits your typing habits. Price will be more or less the same, at least in the EU or USA, and you save all the time wasted in replacing the keyboard. I did it and I don't regret it.

Re: Another Laptop Keyboard thread

Get some keyboard stickers - I got mine from 4keyboard.com and they last for years.

EDIT: I see you prefer the slicker but more limited and expensive option

I think it’s a great solution actually, I have the double US/German option so I can also use the Umlaute when needed...

Stickers are not cool for backlit keyboards...

Re: Another Laptop Keyboard thread

I got an XPS 13 with a US keyboard a couple of years ago, from Dell online.

Lenovo does let you configure a US keyboard on their Thinkpads, I confirmed recently. Regardless the stupid IT guy got the wrong configuration and delivered a swiss keyboard which is not annoying me as much as I have a dock and a proper mechanical keyboard (another PITA to get the one I wanted with a QWERTY layout).

However, when the laptop restarts, it defaults in the wrong layout, so I'm typing my password in the CH QWERTZ layout on a US keyboard. I choose to see it as a "security" feature instead of an infuriating bug...

Get an apple, keyboards can be selected in the software. Amd you can change on the fly.

Currently using N. American and Swiss French on my Mac, iPad and iPhone.

The software layout can always be chosen freely, here question is about hardware that is matching it.
