Left phone in a taxi

Hi everyone, any advice is appreciated.

Left my phone on a taxi ride in Basel but unfortunately have not written down neither the license plate number nor the taxi company itself. It was a normal taxi, not Uber.

I have findmyphone activated and I can see where it is located - basically city area that is packed with taxi companies. I've googled and called all of them this morning but none of them had it. I can still see the phone on the map, it is online and has not been moving since was brought there, so it has most likely been brought to the office by the driver.

Any other ideas what I can do now? Go to police and report it?

Go to the place where it is held?

If it's not moving, it's not going to be difficult to find, is it?

If you can see where it is, can't you just go to the office in person? Or if that's too far off your beaten track, maybe do some sleuthing and work out which taxi company has an office at that address? Typically if you google a postal address Google will tell you the names of any companies at that address.

I am ashamed to say I haven't , if it is permanently lost then at least it was an expensive learning

This is what I tried, called all of those that were googleable. Going there in person would be my next step. Was wondering whether it would be a good idea to go to police first. Also, taxi companies apparently do not bring lost things to fundbüro but rather keep them poste restante which is a big pain in the ass in this particular case.

Why would it be lost? The whole point of "findmyiphone" is exactly to find your phone.

Why don't you copy paste the map of the location of the phone on here and see if anyone can name the taxi firm?

You could also call your phone and see if anyone picks it up. You don't need the passcode to answer a call. Maybe someone will realise it's lost and be able to help you.

The police are likely to tell you to use the finder app rather than blue-light a rescue mission to get it for you.

You only need to report to the police if it's been stolen and you need to claim on the insurance.

if you have the location and building address, surely just go there physically and get it. Common sense?

Why would you go to the police first when no crime has been committed? I mean seriously, I cannot even figure out your logic with that bizzarre question.

Almost no-one gets or keeps taxi receipts from late nights out unless it's for business use.

Yup, it's on but nobody picks. So I'll just give it a try and walk around the block to talk to all of the companies

Re: Left phone in a taxi

I would maybe ring your phone when you get to each of the companies and you'll then be able to hear if it rings, rather than relying on some taxi company being honest....

Re: Left phone in a taxi

Send yourself a text message (in German) saying "I have lost this telephone - please contact me on XXXX to arrange its return.' The message should show up on the screen even when locked.

I'll let someone who speaks German translate the sentence above.

Text messages will more than likely not show up on a phone screen these days. It's all about privacy.

I don't think it's quite as simple as that. OP has stated that there are a lot of taxi companies in the area, perhaps many on the same road? The accuracy of the GPS in most phones isn't that great and that's when they're outside... inside it can be substantially worse.

I wouldn't recommend accusing a taxi company of dishonesty based on a find my iphone location. Not that it's useless, just take the results with a pinch of salt.

Re: Left phone in a taxi

A couple of years back an almost brand new iPhone was found on the road outside our home. Could get the lock screen to appear but not any more as it was password locked.

E-mailed all our neighbours with a picture of the lock screen to no avail. Finally took it to the police in Nyon.

Made us realise that our phones have no information on/with it to help someone return it to us if it is lost.

So I’ve edited our lock screens to include our home phone number.

P.S. The phone was never claimed from the police. Our femme de menage took prized possession one year later. Here teenage soon reset it to factory settings.

After only one year?

I recently got some cash I found, but after 5 years.

Yes after only one year. But it probably lost 9/10ths of its value in that year. She was pleased though, as she could retire her flip-phone.
