Re: Where to buy a Swiss watch?

To provide you some guardrails you should look at the following brands, as an example: Omega, Tissot, Tag Heuer, Nomos (German, not Swiss, but great quality for the price)

These are the high quality brands that offer pieces within your budget. I would highly recommend Nomos, a very underrated brand, that is currently catching the eye of watch enthusiasts for their price quality ratio.

Where to get these? Bahnhofstrasse, Bucherer, Lohri. Check out the watches you like and then tracking them down should be pretty easy.

All crap, cheap watches sold for fancy prices

The movements are all cheap Chinese origin, possibly modified slightly, but the origins remain....

Either you buy a cheap watch, less than Chf 250.— or an expensive watch, more than Chf 7’500.—. Anything in between is really not worth it

The thing is all watches costing 7.5k are still mass produced watches, nothing very special at all. Rolex makes roughly 1 Million watches a year. A truly Hand made watch will take 1 watch maker over a year. In that price range 40% of turnover is spent on marketing.

Re: Where to buy a Swiss watch?

all I can say, it pays to shop around...

I just bought a swiss watch on ebay.de for 350 euro and then I sold it on ricardo, it went for nearly 800 francs...

point is people here pay way too much

To someone with limited funds (ie most of the known world), a luxury mass-produced watch IS special. To belittle them because they are not hand-made in limited amounts is just ridiculously (laughably, even) pretentious and arrogant.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Right.

For one example - Omega Speedmaster Professional, a watch with so much heritage and quality - costs around 5-6k (in a shop in any CH town/airport, significantly cheaper elsewhere).

You sir are talking bullshit.

However for someone with limited funds to waste 7500 on a watch is just as ridiculous.

I only know a handful of wealthy individuals & none of whom have spent more than 5000 on a watch, the majority don't even wear a watch as they don't wish to draw attention to their wealth.

The movement is finished in the Longenes factory. Just as with ETA the movement manufacture all part of the Swatch group.

Maybe, but wait until you come to sell your Chf 5-6000.-- watch....they really do not hold thier value whatsoever.

They are expensive to buy, very difficult to re-sell at anything near 50% ofd the original purchase price

Generally best to buy second hand for 2k.
What people don't realise is a service from a main agent will cost 800 plus & is recommended every 5 years.

My ex bought a used Rolex in Bond St, from Watches of Switzerland a Rolex dealer. Repairs in the first 5 years were roughly the same as the watch cost going to W.O.S.. A repair last year at an independent watch maker exceeded the original purchase price.

Not sure, have a look at Chrono24.
I can get a spank brand new one from a Swiss certified watchshop for under 4k.
And there are used ones going for about (or even above - LOL silly people I agree) the same price.

Anyway, definitely hold value better than cars.

I do agree that people do forget about maintenance costs, it should be thought about when deciding.

Re: Where to buy a Swiss watch?

Most of the brands have to buy back old unsold models from their dealers & upgrade them to next years model. This is to stop them being sold off for half price.
In the early days of Raymond Weil (ca 1983) , I did buy one of their watches half price from a chain in London. That won't happen today.

My Submariner just went into Rolex for it's first service in 8 years. CHF750. That's less than a hundred bucks a year on maintenance.

Rolex has a 5 year guarantee and 10 year service intervals. How did your ex rack up the value of the watch in repairs in the first 5 years?

Not true. Omega produces their own movement. Anyway the Swatch group owns ETA, so, technically speaking could be considered in house.

I made a film for Rolex SAV (after sales service), it never saw the light of day for obvious reasons

It was a second hand watch, bought from a Rolex dealer. Here is the receipt !

Historical new prices are quite interesting https://www.minus4plus6.com/PriceEvolution.php

Interesting that the AD provided no guarantee, even if the watch was used. I think that this could be the case of bad luck though. Regarding the price of Rolex, you mention 'mass produced', but try getting your hands on a stainless steel sports model. I just put an order in for a Daytona, which could take 5 years...or I could get one now, for triple the price.

My Submariner is now worth more than I paid for it, as is my Speedmaster, so if you buy well, you wont lose money.
