Where to buy a Swiss watch?

Yes, I know, in Switzerland...

But really I'd appreciate any recommendations on where within Switzerland to buy a watch. I'm living in the Lausanne area, so preferably somewhere within an hour of here. I'm looking to spend 1000-3000 CHF. Should I check out the vallee de joux? Geneva? Or is Lausanne as good as anywhere?

Re: Where to buy a Swiss watch?

You'll generally be able to get it much cheaper on the internet, from the UK for example, than at the full-price shops you'll find in CH.

And anyway, how can you want to buy a watch based on nothing more than a vague, and massively wide, budget like that? If you're simply wanting to show off his rich you are to your friends then I suggest you get something much cheaper and just lie to them about how much it cost.

(FWIW I can never get my head round expensive watches anyway).

Well if I knew exactly what I wanted I wouldn't really need to post a thread asking for advice, now would I?

Broadly speaking, within the price range I specified is one type of store better than another? Is there a "watch district" somewhere where a bunch of stores are clustered?

Well Zürich Bahnhofstrasse is a paradise for buying watches. Might be worth it to make a visit there.

Re: Where to buy a Swiss watch?

If you don't know what you like, head to any of the larger department stores to look around - Loeb, Manor and Globus all have watches for sale at varying price points. Or you can visit some local jewelry/watch shops.

Yes, everything you see will be at retail price but you can at least decide whether you want a Rolex or whatever. You can try on a few watches and see what looks good on your wrist vs. looking good in a display case.

Broadly speaking and even precisely speaking until you know approximately what you want nobody can help you.

I strongly suggest not buying from the internet as evidently you have no clue about watches and so there is very high chance you'll end up buying a fake.

Good fakes are very hard to tell apart from the real thing unless you relly know what you are doing and even then it's not easy.

How about, and this is crazy I know... doing a bit of online research before going to a dealer? You can Google "best watches under X dollars" and see a ton of styles and advice to help you form an idea of what kind of watch you are looking for before spending so much money. Going to a watch store blind and uninformed is never a good idea.

1. There are reputable online seller. Go to Chrono24.com, search for the watch you like and keep an eye on the dealer reviews… dont go to very dodgy looking shops that turned up in your Facebook feed or Google AdWords...

2. If I was spending 1-3k: Its honestly not much for a Swiss made watch. So this will either buy you
- a watch from a "fashion" brand rather than a traditional watch brand. Their stuff is made in China, shipped to CH, put together here, so the watch can be sold as "Swiss Made".
- the lower end models of the lower end brands of "proper watches".

If I were the OP would I rather go for the second hand market as there are always some good deals in the 2-3 k range. Inform yourself and keep an eye on Ricardo... if thats no option wait for the summer sale and hope there is a deal as Swiss retailers dont really have competitive prices. Its literally better to buy a Swiss watch anywhere around the globe than Switzerland.

Re: Where to buy a Swiss watch?

To provide you some guardrails you should look at the following brands, as an example: Omega, Tissot, Tag Heuer, Nomos (German, not Swiss, but great quality for the price)

These are the high quality brands that offer pieces within your budget. I would highly recommend Nomos, a very underrated brand, that is currently catching the eye of watch enthusiasts for their price quality ratio.

Where to get these? Bahnhofstrasse, Bucherer, Lohri. Check out the watches you like and then tracking them down should be pretty easy.

Re: Where to buy a Swiss watch?

End-consumers can order watches directly from Grovana Watch Company, located near Sissach BL. It apparently can take a few days to ship the order as they may have to produce it first:
