American beds/mattresses in CH

Hello

Do you know any place that sells American mattresses or beds?
So far, we only found Aireloom in Milan, but itís like double the price from US and also involves importing taxes in CH.

Or do you know any company that would transport a mattress from US to CH?

Thanks!

You've probably got your reasons, and all, but why not buy a bed locally and save yourself a heap of stress and expense?

Iíve got my reasons, right, my back refuses to get Swiss-ed. And a matter of preferences, if one can enjoy a Lagunitas from pretty much any store, why not an American bed too?

1) You can get a mattress made to your specification from Elite in Aubonne/VD

2) A mattress is a very big thing, it will be .....equally, very expensive to transport

Sure, that’s fair. You can go American on everything and import everything - but it will simply come at a price ;)

If by American bed you mean a boxspring, you can find these in most stores across Switzerland these days.

I actually mean an American brand and specs, i.e. the same product sold in US stores. Serta for instance...

I guess that is not necessarily a matter of nationality... Just considering IKEA Switzerland they have many types of mattresses: think or thick, with springs or foam, syntethic or organic, soft or hard... you can just go to one of their stores and try a few of them, they are on display. There's a good chance your back will like at least one of them, and if so you'll save a lot of money.
Same applies to other stores, of course, I just know IKEA by first hand. And with free IKEA Family membership you can return them within 3 months (sometimes even 6).

You may want to bring along a selection of suitably sized bed linens for the American mattress as well.

Tip for those needing US sized bed linens: LLBean offers free delivery to Switzerland.

And packages go through Borderfree, so customs admin and delivery time are reasonable, too.

(Many of the other US bed linen retailers ship to Switzerland, but AFAIK LLBean is the only one with free delivery.)

My husband has had a lower back problem for years, in the UK we always bought firm orthopaedic type mattresses. We've had an IKEA bed frame with a really firm mattress for 3 years now and it's really comfortable. I did buy British sized pillows as I don't like the slightly square shaped continental type, I kept getting a crick in my neck and shoulder with them. I bought the pillows in Scotland and brought them across in a suitcase.

I looked into buying a Westin Hotel Heavenly Bed when I lived in CH. I ultimately converted to the Swiss/German system and find it quite comfortable, but the Heavenly Beds are very nice! You won't be able to find sheets in Europe that fit, but you can go back to the Heavenly Bed store anytime.

Good luck!

Why not? It says on their website that itís a 200x200 bed, which is a common enough size even if theyíre calling it king, no?

Common enough here, but U.S. mattresses tend to be at least 80" long (203 cm) and sometimes they are thicker. A California King is 84" long (213 cm). European beds are usually no more than 200 cm long. ;)

King doesn't mean the same thing from one country to another:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bed_size

Anecdotally I'd also say that American mattresses seem to be thicker than Swiss ones, maybe because we like built-in pillow-top and such.

I have a 180x200 bed and the sheets barely fit. Maximum size of sheets that I could find is 200x200... with a 200x200 mattress that would be unconfortable, considering that the sheets are supposed to also cover the sides a bit.

With 40% of the grownups obese, US beds and matresses are probably built to different bodyweights than European beds.

I had to LOL when I saw that this post got reds from both Today Only and Chuff. I can see how terribly offensive it was... :p

Who knew, perhaps there's a market for these things. Our guest room has a queen sized Simmons Beautyrest pillowtop, have wanted to upgrade it even if there are obviously fewer visitors now
