Looking for information on Needlework Techniques/Traditions in Ticino or Switerzland

My great-grandmother, who was an obstetrician, immigrated from Ticino to California in 1912. As a young woman she did exquisite embroidery, mainly whitework, hardanger and crocheting, though it may be needle tatting.

Recently I inherited her embroidery. In September, I shall be doing a presentation to the Humboldt Embroiders Guild on this embroidery and I am hoping to get background information on late 19th century needlework/ embroidery techniques and traditions in Ticino or Switzerland.

Please post any information you may have or where I can go to get some information. I have emailed the two textile museums in Switzerland.

Thank you.

Have you written to Ballenberg?

If not:

Ballenberg, the Freilicht (open air) museum, is a wealth of knowledge of traditional crafts and handiwork. They run classes to teach these skills, including embroidery, lacemaking, etc., so someone there should have the expertise you need. See here:

https://www.ballenberg.ch/en/themes/...aft/embroidery

Given that preserving the past and keeping traditions alive is their mission, I would think they would be an excellent resource for you.

Ballenberg gathers traditions from all over Switzerland. Buildings as well; they have re-assembled, stone by stone, ancient buildings from all over Switzerland. It's an amazing way to get a 'hands-on' understanding of Swiss life in years gone by.

Ballenberg is a treasure. If anyone reading this has not yet been - go!

---

In what language did you write to the museums? As an FYI, you are likely to get a faster response if you write in the local language (D, F, I).
