Swiss vs. American "Evangelism"

Pardon me if this is a very silly question. I'm pretty much a full ignorant in this branch of public knowledge (yet I know the difference between Catholics and Protestants ).

As the Swiss reformed church has the term "Evangelisch" in it, does it have anything to do with the American Evangelicalism? What are the similarities, if any, and what are the differences? Do the similarities end in the name?

Re: Swiss vs. American "Evangelism"

Reformed church = followers of Zwingli and Calvin.
Evangelisch = followers of Luther

All originally obviously.No idea how that compares to US churches.

I do know that some reformed churches in Canada are linked to the durch reformed churches who also link back to Calvin.

They are utterly and totally different concepts even though the words sound similar. Evangelical in the Swiss context essentially means Lutheran in the American vocabulary. In America, an evangelical church is essentially one in which its members are "born again" when joining the faith; once 'saved', they 'evangelize' to others around them to get them to join too. While some of these churches may be from traditional Protestant denominations, many of these churches in the US are independent, modern and extremely large, especially in the bible belt in the middle of the country.

Re: Swiss vs. American "Evangelism"

Evangelical Reformed is Calvin, rather than Luther.

The term "Evangelical" means that the doctrine of conversion applies. I.e. no-one is born Christian, but must choose to become Christian.

Evangelical churches in the US hold this doctrine as well. But many other parts of their religious expression are ather different. There's also the evangelical wing of the Anglican church in the UK, which is more like US expression, but nonetheless, quite distinct.

There are US style evangelical churches in Switzerland.
