Don't get your knickers in an irrational twist because someone dares to criticise your favourite watch brand. No-one is "shitting on his choice" we are informing him why it's not necessarily a good choice and that other alternatives which he may not know about but may like are available, and normal adults can deal with that kind of stuff (except you obviously who seems to feel outrage on his behalf due to your own emotional investment in Tag as an owner)

In the end it's a public forum and the OP clearly has little knowledge about watches (otherwise he wouldn't be looking at a 1600chf quartz), which is why those of us with more experience will feel free to chip in and offer him advice. Deal with it.
I never said it was my favourite brand. All I said was that I have a Tag watch and I love it. I guess reading comprehension wasn't your best subject at school.

It's nothing to do with my emotional investment in anything. I don't emotionally invest in brands like you may. But the OP didn't ask our opinion. It happens all the time on EF and other forums. He asked about grey market websites and then we have 'Chuff who is too good for a TAG and an expert in everything' giving his unwanted opinion.

Also I don't understand how a 4.8 star rating after over 1700 review is bad from Chronext?

Again, he doesn't have to ask for an opinion to get one, this is not complicated logic. Your overreaction and choice of language/petty and baseless insults are an obvious contradition to what you write... you are very clearly bothered by what I wrote and are throwing your toys out of your e-pram (as usual), so lets not pretend otherwise.

Every bad review specifically points to terrible customer service and communication in the area of after-sales when it has been needed (which most people don't usually need unless there's a problem). The positive reviews are from people who purchased and never needed the additional customer service. The Google reviews have a similar theme.

Your lack of self awareness is astounding.

I'm petty when you are making stuff up about me (favourite watch brand?), using language like 'knickers in an irrational twist' 'Deal with it' (yes I got in before your edit) 'normal adults'.

Again, nothing to do with what you're saying about the watch brand. Just a mini-rant about 'he doesn't have to ask for an opinion to get one'

That had me bemused. What is a beginner watch?

Do you mean something like this:

Some people buy their first "nice" or "interesting" or "whatever" watch, and then go on to buy some more either by trading or by making a collection.

A respectable brand like Tag with a respectable tool watch like the Aquaracer is a good way to get into watches, regardless of quartz or automatic.

BTW, I wouldn't mind owning the right quartz watch. For example Grand Seiko is doing some spectacular things with quartz, things much more interesting than a run-of-the-mill 4hz movement from ETA... I'm not saying that a quartz Aquaracer is the right watch, but let's don't disregard quartz completely either.

If you buy a quartz you may as well just spend a couple of hundred francs because they are already incredibly accurate even without Grand Seikos advancements. Spending a couple of grand on one is just lunacy. A quartz Aquaracer as a first watch is often a direct pathway to regret the moment you realise that you have wasted your money and start wanting an automatic.

Until you drop your expensive automatic or need to service, can easily run 500 CHF, way more for an Omega or let alone a Rolex. I have a early Raymond Weil quartz from the 1980's only ever needed a battery.

Yup it is certainly more expensive to maintain an automatic in terms of servicing (usually only needed every 5-10 years and some go even longer without needing it), but then again the difference in complexity between a quartz movement and a mechanical movement is significant.

if you just want to buy watch to tell the time then buy a cheaper quartz. If you want a timepiece of worth with a mechanically beating heart that you will only grow to love and appreciate the more you own it (and accept the smaller inconveniences like less accuracy and manual date changes) then buy an automatic.

Fixed that for you.

Edit: I see from your next post that you basically agree with this. Fair enough.

Re: New Swiss Watch Question

It's hard to say if it's a fake or not, except the fakes are usually the more expensive watches, such as Breitling, Rolex etc.

You could always check with Tag if they know the seller, or have them check the serial number. Also, but with a credit card that has purchase insurance included just in case.

Whichever, enjoy your new watch.

Re: New Swiss Watch Question

Got me a while to go through all the comments.

Full disclosure, I dont know anything about the watch industry. However, it is my wife who would want me to have a watch for my birthday and she wanted me to chose 1.

I might be a person whom you can say is a simpleton. So I chose that watch(among few others) just because I liked how they looked, nothing more. I am not a fan of automatic watches so want to go for Quartz.

I do intend to take a Tag Heuer for sentimental reasons I donot want to share in a public forum and have decided to buy TAG HEUER FORMULA 1 CALIBRE 5 in Germany and have found a dealer giving a 30% discount and in line with https://www.chronext.ch/

So I'm a lunatic ? Many would agree.. but knowing why a GS 9F86 is worth the money wouldn't be one of the reasons.

I wanted to answer as well, but couldn't be bothered to explain to someone that views watches in what seems to be a completely different way than me (and you), and wouldn't understand.

Automatic watches (for me) are great not because they're "automatic", but because of what that actually means. They are mechanical contraptions, with deliberate design, achieving something great in a limited amount of space. There are quartz movements that have hundreds of moving parts, more complicated from a mechanical standpoint than many automatic movements, and that are temples to accuracy and precision. The 5-pointed star version of the movement above is a masterpiece and I would love to get a sport GMT that I consider to be a far superior and more interesting watch than just another Explorer...

Good for you. Hope you enjoy it! Nice looking watch. (Quartz or not!) I was very tempted, however, to suggest a limited edition Bucherer Tag Heuer: https://www.bucherer.com/ch/de/uhren...6pfMi_yHqGlwYM

This thread has been a huge waste of my time. I started looking at watches, then came across one that was WR to 2000m! Then I wondered what happens to the human body at 2000m and started reading a whole lot of stuff about that. I want the last 2 hours of my life back!

Re: New Swiss Watch Question

Hi All,

Did not buy the TH. Went to Germany, wore it, didnt like it.

Still looking, perhaps one day I find what I am looking for

For now, there is this watch I saw, way beyond my comfort from a price standpoint and its automatic

https://www.breitling.com/ch-en/watc...A13315351C1P1/

https://www.chrono24.ch/breitling/pr...id12749334.htm

The price different is appalling 45% cheaper. Does it even make sense ?
