New Swiss Watch Question

Dear all,

I would like to own a Tag Heuer watch and was able to finalize a few, need to get just 1.

When I check the price on official Tag Heuer website. The price comes for 1500 CHF. However there are other websites with Swiss domain like chronext.ch, I am able to buy that watch for a lot cheaper, around 400-500 less.

I am not sure how can that be a legit watch and if so, how can Tag Heuer make money with a competitor selling their watches 30% cheaper.

Any ideas ?

Please provide links to the specific model and stores/pages you are talking about.

If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably counterfeit.

Doubtful the watch is a fake. RRP and actual prices vary depending on factors such as if the watches being sold are grey market or not and how lean the operation selling the watch is.

I just Googles Chronext and it has pretty crappy reviews so I wouldn't buy from them anyway.

Dealer margins are 40-70% depending on brand. Gray dealers are buying stock in bulk from autorized dealers for the same what they've paid or a bit less just to have turnover.

30% off is hardly too good to be true.

TAG Heuer is not a particularly good brand and doesn't sell so well so big discounts are easily available.

Look at second hand market too, many are brand new but old stock sold with 50 or 60% discount over new models

My immediate reaction, would not be particularly exciting by these, but everyone to their own...

Last time I bought a watch - a Tissot, with some specific functions I wanted - I did so from a UK vendor. who had to get the watch shipped to them from Switzerland, then ship it back to me at my French address. Was something like 30% cheaper than anywhere I could find it in CH, so the sorts of reductions the OP is seeing don't surprise me in the least.

I never quite understand why anyone visiting CH would choose to buy a watch here, when the same item is almost always going to be cheaper elsewhere. Then again, I don't really get the idea of expensive or flashy watches per se. , so clearly there's something I'm missing there.

It's a watch - it's not going to be "exciting" whatever the brand name is.

Is your budget 1500chf? What are you looking for in a watch exactly? Automatic should be a given, but do you want a daily watch that can stand up to abuse like a divers watch? Something that can dress up or down?

Tag isn't "bad", but they are very mainstream and have turned very gimmicky over the years and on average they lose about half the value the moment you take them out of the shop. Buying them used makes more sense.

Speak for yourself, some of us are watch lovers! Plus if you are buying retail with full warranty then Switzerland prices are actually ok depending on the brand. Tissot get big discounts worldwide but other brands don't. :)

check chrono24 and filter for swiss shops, you should get many alternatives.

Getting good prices online is a given in the watch world, even for new stuff. Jomashop in the US is a typical example where you can get entry level stuff like Hamilton for very decent discounts.

Lastly, Tag is a great brand, lots of heritage, some great watches, and they make their own movements - an Aquaracer is a great beginner watch

I've always had good experiences with creation watches. It's definitely grey market and I think they ship from Singapore, so you will probably have to pay import duties.

Also, if you like a Tag watch then get a Tag watch. They are nice watches. I have one and love it. I almost feel like it's fashionable to hate on Tag because it's popular.

Not as a quartz, it isn't. As an automatic, for 2200chf it is also extremely overpriced.

I wouldn't say it is fashionable to hate Tag, but as you build more knowledge of watches and what is out there you learn that there are certainly better options for the money. I think Tag is a run-of-the-mill brand in terms of design and quality, overpriced and riding on the coat tails of past glories.

That's fine and it's your opinion. But the OP didn't even ask about our opinion on the watch. Just about websites to buy it.

We don't know why the OP wants a Tag, but they obviously seem to be keen on one rather than other brands. Again, if OP wants a Tag then they should get a Tag. Frankly I think it's rude for people to shit on his choice when he's not even asked for our opinion. Even worse is Ace1 who is shitting on anyone who likes a nice watch.

That had me bemused. What is a beginner watch?

Do you mean something like this:

Don't get your knickers in an irrational twist because someone dares to criticise your favourite watch brand. No-one is "shitting on his choice" we are informing him why it's not necessarily a good choice and that other alternatives which he may not know about but may like are available, and normal adults can deal with that kind of stuff (except you obviously who seems to feel outrage on his behalf due to your own emotional investment in Tag as an owner).

In the end it's a public forum and the OP presumably has little knowledge about watches (otherwise he wouldn't be looking at a 1600chf quartz for his first watch), which is why those of us with more experience will feel free to chip in and offer him helpful and constructive advice. :)
