Buy timber to make a bed

Hello,
I want to make a bed by myself, simple construction out of holzbalken.
To do so I need timber. Easy option is pine (fichte) but I think it would look a bit cheap (any recommendations how to polish/finish it nicely ?).
So I am wondering
If it is possible to buy(where, preferably ZH ?) oak/akazia or any other nice looking timber (in sizes like 10 X 10 X 200 cm).

Re: Buy timber to make a bed

Order them from your local DIY store, or if you know what you are doing order straight from a timber yard.

If you can find a nice stain and then plenty of varnish, pine can look like whatever you want it to be.

I use clear nitro on pine.

agree, however I do not know\do not have experience with this, and learning by practice here might be quite costly
as for now contacted sagewerk nearby, waiting for their replay :-)

I know COOP sells wood, this is an example: https://www.bauundhobby.ch/bauen-ren...24-m/p/4965761
You can try browsing their catalogue or going directly to one of their stores and ask directly for what you need. In Zurich you have one in Altstetten (trolleybus 31) and one in Oerlikon (you see it from the railway station, on the north side).

Well that's what cut-offs are for, stain a few bits, see if you like the colour, then varnish them and see if you like the colour+level of shine. I mean on larger projects building wall pannelling we just did big patches on the back of the panels as tests.
I'm sure there are many instructionionals out there, but the key is sanding, and then sanding some more, then you dye, and might as well sand a Little more just in case. Varnish, sand, varnish, sand.

I've not had much experience with the Clear Nitro Tom mentions, from what I can see it's a spray on varnish?

Re: Buy timber to make a bed

At Jumbo/ Hornbach/OBI you'll get the timber you want for this purpose, including all the 'hardware' stuff you need to build your bed.

Also any wood treating products and paints to make pine look like mahogany

Alternatively, you could also buy Europalettes, sand them and paint them.

It's not varnish, it's lacquer, specifically nitrocellulose lacquer.

Either spray or brush. For furniture, I normally just use a brush.

Re: Buy timber to make a bed

When I did a lot of building in my flat - it was an old one, I could basically do what I wanted there - I just went to the local carpenter (look for "Schreinerei").
Got many pretty good pointers from them for free too.

Re: Buy timber to make a bed

Do you have a design in mind or are you going to build around the wood you can find? If you use recycled wood then you probably won't need to stain it. I have probably got what you need but you will need to collect it from Meilen. Price depends on what you choose and my time to cut it, about 25/30m for 20x10cm beans.

Re: Buy timber to make a bed

Not sure if it is okay to post this but here goes:

Are you looking for a project? Or would you consider buying a bed. I have a 180 x 200 solid wood bed from Hasena which is solid oak. The wood has been stained quite dark, grey/black. Oak is a a much harder wood than pine.

If you are interested in something like this you can send me a PM.

Re: Buy timber to make a bed

as for now, I found timber not far(15-20 km) from zurich with the following prices:
Fichte - 500/m3
Oak - 1700/m3
Ash - 1600/m3
Larch - 1400/m3
(prices for reference).
Those are prices for just raw sawn timber. I plan to Knobeln (planing) it by myself.
As I understand better quality timber would cost 2-3 times more which makes the whole idea a bit pointless.

Another challenge - to find proper beams - they have already cut beams in different sizes (WxH) and different length and I would need to buy the whole beam of lets say 3m even if I need only 2m long bean out of it.

Re: Buy timber to make a bed

I have parts of my old solid wood bed in the garage. You can come by if you are in Zug, have a browse. You may either get a clearer idea of what you want and perhaps pick up a few bits and bobs for free.
Pm me if you want further details or pics. Wood is in a great shape and there metal bolts and nuts, etc.
