Whatsapp Status: For ages 30+

Forget FB or Instagram...

I've found most of my Swiss friends use Whatsapp Status to inform the rest of their contacts on where they've been, etc.

Have you noticed this too?

yes because this was the trend some years ago which lead to the direct extension of status and development of stories etc. to expand on this theme and:

no because i never bother looking at status and just use WA as a glorified texting app.

It does sometimes annoy me how some people will want to use it instead of just texting. Surely if you've got data you're not going to be paying for SMS are you, so why make it more complicated?

As for status, I'm afraid I didn't even know it was there, but I also eschew FB and the like, never quite understanding why anyone would be interested in what I'm doing, or why I should be interested in them on a day to day, sometimes even hour to hour, basis.

Because it is easy to have a group chat, because it is there to be used.

And some people I chat with do get charged for SMS

This. Both. ;)

I'm actually surprised people know so little about it.

I look at the status photos every once in a while and have even posted some photos when I'm abroad. What's nice about the feature is that:

- it seems to be used by a lot of my Swiss friends
- it disappears after 24 hours
- by tapping on the photo, you've let the person know you've seen the photo

What I don't like: Whatsapp is now owned by FB.

Like every other social media, it's a personal preference but many Swiss really do seem to use it.

Despite your plan someone will likely will pay for SMSs sent across borders. What's app not.

Last time I bought a roaming package when travelling I got 10 free SMSs ...

Group chat is what I do use it for. But for 121 it's more of a pain. People who insist on using it in environments where wifi/3/4G coverage is less than perfect, especially those who don't even have data roaming, and here I'm talking about skiing or sailing, are those I'm thinking of here.

First, as said before, group chats.
Second, I have SMS yes, but only in CH, so for people I know in foreign, like my family, I use WA.
Third, I have SMS but not MMS so for pictures, even to those in CH, WA.
Forth, you can put WA on ignore for a time, useful when going into a meeting, or when someone is being annoying.
Fifth. Does everyone have free SMS?

So the default is that only people in your local contacts can see this status..

I'm in many WA groups, some with 100+ people in them but very few of these people are in my local contacts. We either communicate in the group or just click an individual in the list.

I gotta say I really dislike being a large group WA member. It never stops pinging me.

I miss the times when work comm got reduced by leaving the premises.

Being constantly connected isn't to our advantage, really. Except the free call function, that's awesome. Long distance phonecalls used to be pita.

OP - quite a few of my local friends aren't on FB, me neither. I think maybe that's why people keep updating their status and avatars? Who knows. But VD conseiller has banned classroom WA groups until the students turn 16. Makes sense.

Re: annoying notifications.

All messenging apps have a mute function.

Whatsapp is not allowed to be used as an official platform by schools. However, they can't stop students from creating their own Whatsapp groups for classroom use.

I'd never be on a WA or FB group with my students.

I thought WhatsApp is mainly used as shadow IT for anything you dont want to go on record and without any form of audit trail. Finma is currently looking into the case of a Swiss banks CEO where the whatsapp data all "disappeared"...

The news said Whatsapp, but some articles mentioned Threema...
