Month long trip to the US > buy/sell car?

We have a trip planed to the US in the spring, and I've been tossing around the idea of buying a car to use and then selling it again upon leaving, in order to avoid the ridiculous cost of renting a car plus adequately insuring said rental. I've heard of people doing it before, and of course there's risk involved. But I'd like to hear some thoughts on the matter. I've got family and friends there to help, but I want to have a solid plan in place before proposing anything.

I'm open to all ideas. Thanks!

I've heard of people doing it. But more like groups of friends that are able to split the cost of a junk car down to a very low amount and all drive at the same time. If you're the only payer I'm not sure it's worth it unless it's a months-long vacation.

Can you even insure it if you're not a US resident? What's the cost of car insurance if you can? Also I guess it depends on what you call adequately insured.

Re: Month long trip to the US > buy/sell car?

IMHO unlikely worthwhile effort to buy & resale for just a month. To start with, cost isn't just car price (partially recoverable) - it's license plates, title change, sales tax, insurance, inevitable small fixes, etc which are all sunk costs. If you do a high-mileage trip across multiple states, you're lowering resales by racking up miles, plus bear risk of a big repair and having to resell with out-of-state plates. If low-mileage and staying around one place, you still have hassle plus burn few days of vacation doing the buying & selling. Suggest doing an unlimited rental with Avis/Herz/Alamo etc if need lots of distance, going with Enterprise local rental if staying in one place. Good luck!

Re: Month long trip to the US > buy/sell car?

If you have friends/family that would be willing to register and insure the car in their name, that will reduce the hassle significantly. You could buy a beater for a few hundred dollars in most areas that will certainly be suitable. Insurance and registration for a month won't be much and you can junk, give or sell the car when you are done with it. If it's worth the potentially few hundred dollars saved, only you can decide.

Re: Month long trip to the US > buy/sell car?

I know guys who did it for a six month stay... but one month will never make sense financially especially given that us rental prices are lower than European... only reason to do that would be if you want to drive Route 66 in your favorite classic.

Re: Month long trip to the US > buy/sell car?

I also agree that purchasing and then reselling a car for only a one's month stay in the US is not worth the time nor the hassle.

I used to have to rent a car for 6 weeks in the summer when we would travel back to the US to stay with family. I found the best rate was when we used a consolidator based in Europe as they would include the cost of insurance in the rental price as opposed to as an "add-on" feature (where they tend to gouge you with extortionate per diem rates!)

The company we used was: www.carrentals.co.uk. We found their rates far more competitive than using a US consolidator (such as Priceline, Expedia et al...)

Re: Month long trip to the US > buy/sell car?

A friend did it for three months with a motorcycle that he bought in the US, and then brought it back here.
