How do work permits work with ski instructors?

There's an article in the Sunday Times about how the end of Freedom of Movement will affect British ski instructors. I was just thinking - how does it work now? Take a French instructor working for a ski school based in France. He might well take his flock across the Swiss border quite regularly.

Is he supposed to have a cross-border Swiss permit?

No. We do it in reverse from here, and are even allowed to take start a lesson on France (although we very rarely do), as long as we can prove that said lesson was booked and paid for in Switzerland.

Re: How do work permits work with ski instructors?

If for example you work in a Swiss ski resort, you take your work contract in at the beginning of winter, get your work permit. After next winter, will British instructors be able to do this? Who knows.

Regarding resorts that cross country borders, the resorts have an agreement to let each otherís instructors cross both ways with their clients to teach. Actually the barrier tends more to be the allowable qualification level differences between countries rather than the instructors nationality (ie you need higher quals to teach in Italy & France than in Switzerland), but in linked resorts they let this slide.

It currently works the same for EU and non-EU instructors, so I see no reason why anything would change for non-resident Brits once they're fully withdrawn from EU agreements.

How many Non-EU ski instructors do you know of working in Switzerland? I can think of one Chinese in my resort, he obviously gets his permit based on the fact he can teach skiing in Chinese, not an easy quality to find. How will ski schools prove that they canít find EU ski instructors that can teach in English so Brits can get a permit? There are thousands of EU ski instructors that speak English.

As others have said, they may not need to if new bilateral agreements between the U.K. and Switzerland are drawn up.

Personally, I know perhaps half a dozen non-EU (and non-Chinese) instructors, including Russian, Finnish and American (or was it Canadian?) who work in CH or have done so within the last few years. AFAIK they've all been on L permits, and never encountered problems getting them.

There's none that I know of here, though.

Well Finland is in the EU

If they don't have an EU/EEA citizenship alongside their Non-EU (which is possible) they have to go through the non-eu permit process even for an L, for which they need special skills and it is also an extra hassle for the ski schools, which they might not want to go through if they can employ an EU citizen more easily.

.... but who knows what deal the UK will do.

Probably reasonable as the Swiss remember that it was the Brits that started the idea of downhill skiing, it's been a money spinner ever since.

Thanks all. Just a non-story from the Sunday Times. But reading the comments, it certainly has provoked trolls. Maybe it's a honey trap!
