Shipping personal items from US

Hi, we will be meeting up with family and friends in CH for hiking this summer. My question is: some of us will be spending a month previous visiting friends in hot Italy and won't need their hiking gear. Rather than carting it around on trains, can we fedex/dhl it to meet us in CH? We'll mostly be staying with friends and don't want to inconvenience them, nor do we want to pay taxes. We will be in hotels a few days too. Does it make any difference where we have it shipped: residence vs. hotel? Any BTDT or ideas welcome. I'm planning to bring a packed duffle to check the items when we fly home. Thank you

The Customs will be interested in your shipment, because the threshold is around 40 sfr, everything over is liable to GST and Import Tax.
Cheapest way, will be somebody who is travelling and has only 1 item , so the shipment will be free and if he flies via another country (like UK/EU) , means not direct from the us to ch, the customs will be less alert, when you go through customs with 2 pcs of baggage.

Re: Shipping personal items from US

If your friends are here in Switzerland and willing to receive and keep the package until you get here then the easiest and probably cheapest way is simply to send it economy via the US postal system about a month-6weeks before you travel.

We sort of did the reverse a few years ago when visiting family in the US and bought some things to take back. We didn't want the packages to arrive quickly so the slower economy service was fine. Checked with DHL and USPS; DHL would have cost $100 more per parcel and they'd have just taken it down to the post office anyway.

Re: Shipping personal items from US

Thanks for the information. We have direct flights from US so no other country involved. So, anything, even personal used hiking boots, etc. (which would be worth more than CHF40) would be taxed? Does anyone have any idea about how much the tax would be? I would hate to have a package delivered to someone's house and then put them on the spot to pay the tax. Thanks

Re: Shipping personal items from US

If you have the items as baggage on your flight and not as separate shipment
, the threshold starts at 350 sfr, but is only for items which are determined for somebody else(different sizes of a single item for example, unused).
If you are taking used gear from the us to ch, and got only 2 pcs of Luggage , it will be unlikely, when you take the green exit, that customs will stop you and demand a declaration, what is inside these bags.
When they do a random check and find only used gear and it will be only in 2 sizes , you wil be fine.
There are always more people from the same flight, the hallway at the green exit will give customs a chance of 10 sec, so if you stay calm, nothing will happen.

If you want it to declare these items, have invoices ready, the threshold starts above 350 sfr, you will pay the GST (7.7 %)and above a higher value import tax, depends on the goods.

Re: Shipping personal items from US

Thank you, Blackbird, that's good to know. I was hoping not to bring the stuff with us on the plane since that means we will be carrying it around on trains for a month before it gets used. Was hoping to find an easy way to ship via FedEx/DHL/USPS to CH without incurring customs issues. I read in much older posts that as long as it was marked "Personal" there would be no problem. Sounds like that is no longer the case.
