Re: Installing Laminate/Vinyl flooring

Laid two rooms in our old rental flat -floating directly on top of the old carpet. We decided to move a year later and the landlord wanted it removed, so I relaid the cheap laminate in our new cellar, concrete floor, floating on a polystyrene insulating layer.Lasted ten years and as far as I know is still there; with laminate you need to mop up liquid spills immediately unless you put a sealing layer on top.
Not necessarily, there's laminate and then there's laminate. Some has a real wood veneer finish (although that's confusingly sometime referred to as parquet even though it isn't), some printed, some vinyl coated. Specifically, it will be coded for use in certain areas, so the stuff for bathrooms is waterproof, and kitchen materials will also be much more hard-wearing.

It's also important to put down the right sort of under-flooring, much of which will overlap and self-stick to form an impermeable layer to protect floors below against seepage if appropriate. Personally I'd steer clear of laying on top of carpet - all else apart you'll need a lot more cutting of doors and architraves, and any dirt that's there will remain, and possibly start to reappear round the edges over time. I've always ripped it up and started with the bare concrete, wood or other underlying floor surface.

Thats obvious that its a problem! You clean water away immediately. You don't put it in a bathroom. Dont get vinyl. Looks like shit and stinks.
You should perhaps think about only posting definitive statements on subjects about which you have at least a little knowledge. As I just said, lots of it is specially designed for bathrooms or kitchens, and there's a whole new (in the last few years) type of hard vinyl-topped tongue&groove flooring, also sometimes included in the 'laminate' category, which is completely unlike the old-fashioned soft roll or tiled vinyl flooring that you're presumably thinking of. We might go for that in our next apartment renovation, as it has a much more durable and resistant finish, although it also tends to be much more expensive.

Dear EF members,

Can someone please recommend me a cheap and best person who can install the Laminate/Vinyl click system flooring for me. I would prefer a private person or a small company to keep the cost lower.

Thanks in advance for your help and advise.

Is it a house/apartment you own or just rented? If you own it its worth to get parket and have someone lay it for you. If not then do a cheapie job and lay it yourself ( laminat )

Cheap and best do not go together.

Having done a lot of it myself, I have one piece of advice if you want to do it: Buy the best kneepads you can find.
