Hole boring machine for Asphalt

A question for any handymen, diy enthusiasts or construction professionals. I need to put up a steel gate with three posts on a tarmac drive. The posts need to be sunk about 75cm in. The gate itself is a meter high.

What’s the best way to put a ca. 25cm diameter hole into Asphalt? What tool would I need? And are they rentable in Zurich?

Do I need to hardcore the bottom of hole?

should I use ready mix concrete or asphalt to fill in?

I really hope someone has some suggestions or might know someone who could help.

Cheers

TobiasM

Re: Hole boring machine for Asphalt

You can rent a diamond drill with a bit at the appropriate diameter (about 100 francs a day). A bit more when you throw in a stand, or a vacuum base. It's basically a higher-torque (lower RPMs) drill, that can fit a tube-like drill bit, with encrusted industrial diamond at the tip. Looks like a long crown.

The thing cuts (literally) concrete or asphalt and as you go deeper and deeper the "core" stays inside the tube-shaped bit. At the end of the job, when you retract the bit, the core breaks off from the bottom, and comes out. Plenty of videos in youtube to get an idea.

As your asphalt layer is probably not too deep (do you know how think it is?), a standard length bit should do (they' usually around 50cm long). I doubt it'll be longer than that. My advice: rent the cheapest, but make sure the bit is designed for either asphalt or very abrasive materials.

You cannot "mix" asphalt into the hole. Asphalt is worked hot, above its melting point. You CAN use ready-mix cement from the shop. Any regular quick-set should be fine. Keep in mind you have to overbore a tad, unless you think you can pressure-drive the poles into the hole super-snug. I'd give about 2cm-to-3cm clearance (i.e. an annular gap of 1.0cm to 1.5cm on "either side") to make it comfortable to drive the pole and still have space for the cement to fill the gaps. Make 100000% sure that you don't leave any holes on the surface, where water may leak in and, during winter, freeze and crack your driveway.

PM me for MORE details and usage suggestions. I can give you a quick run-down on the phone, which is a lot easier than writing it all down.

Re: Hole boring machine for Asphalt

Thank you Caleb that looks exactly what is needed and thanks for all the additional info. The asphalt is old and full of cracks and dips where water gathers. Our landlady has said it’s alright to put up the gate. I will have to plan it well. I will PM you if I have any questions. Cheers and stay healthy everyone.

As long as the nooks and crannies are on the surface it's just fine. If the cracks are not deep (e.g. more than 10mm or so), the freezing water will surge to the surface. The problem is when you core 15cm deep. Water on the surface will freeze faster than at the bottom, and then the it all finally freezes, the pressure will crack the base material and your pole will be loose. That's why you have to "seal" the hole with concrete, instead of just sliding it in and using a little cement. Gimme a call if you need help.

Did you also get permission to leave it when you move? Since you do not own, I would absolutely get this in writing.

At the moment it is not easy to buy materials - have you considered hiring someone with the skillset and materials to do this? Placing an ad on Renovera might be your best option.

Yes we have it in writing. We are going to look for someone capable of doing it.

Construction work outdoors doesn't seem to be banned still, so you may be able to get a contractor still. Wish you luck !
