BBQ sites around Luzern (and american-like hotdogs)

Hey Everybody,
Do any of you know of a BBQ site around Luzern that is within 2 minutes walking distance from a bus stop or has a parking spot and would likely be available on a Saturday (preferably with a picnic table)?

Here’s some backstory. I’m American and some friends asked me to put on a 4th of July event so they could experience what it’s like. The tough part is my balcony is under construction and I would like to be outside to social distance anyway. The group would be around 6 people. But I would need to BBQ (I think that’s the most important part of the event) and the only place I know that allows BBQing is the Ufschoetti. But that requires a lot of walking and I need to carry a lot of supplies there. Plus I don’t think they have any picnic tables there (please let me know if you know there are tables). I don’t have a car but if there is a place around Luzern that I could park a car, I can rent a mobility car for the day.

I was thinking of going to the park next to the Heckenlabyrinth or Dreilindenpark at the music school but I’ve never seen anyone bbq in those places so I don’t think it’s allowed. Do any of you know whether it is? Or another idea I had was to pay to reserve a table and BBQ spot somewhere, but does something like that exist?

Also, if anyone has done this before, do you have suggestions for me? I’m not usually a party planner. For food, I have american condiments and sides and can make burgers and get buns, but I don’t know if there is anything close to an american hotdog here or where to get hot dog buns. So I'll probably just skip that.

Thanks for the weinerli suggestion! Do you have any suggestion on something close to a hot dog buns? Sorry for the silly question. I am not a cook and have simple tastes so I usually stick to buying the same ten things from the grocery store lol.

Denner at least sells them, probably the others as well.

Re: BBQ sites around Luzern (and american-like hotdogs)

Migros here in Bern also sells fresh hot dog buns. Sometimes they are located in the corner hidden, ask the shop attendant if you can't find them.

I traditionally make this cake every year, it is quite easy:
https://barefootcontessa.com/recipes/flag-cake

She also makes a killer mac and cheese from scratch recipe that your guests will love. It has loads of Gruyere which there is plenty of here:
https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/...ecipe2-1945401

For drinks, you can get good Lipton Ice Tea at Coop - just add some berries, sugar etc. to liven it up. Have lots of good beer, you can get some good American ones now at Coop like Blue Moon and Brooklyn Brewery (even Coors Light, Sam Adams and MGD if you really want to go authentic).

I also recommend adding a bit of BBQ to the mix - you can get one of the best BBQ sauces from Texas at Coop called Stubbs. Maybe grill some chicken wings. Include a potato salad and cole slaw for sides.

Play some good American rock music like CCR, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top etc.

Get some sparkler candles to "reenact" the fireworks.

Not feeling so patriotic lately, no party for me this year. Have lots of fun! And get there early as good spots are taken up quickly. I don't live in Luzern, but there hasn't ever been a possibility to reserve a public spot that I've seen.

I prefer Migros' sandwich buns for my hot dogs. They need to be cut open, but I just think they're more sturdy for all the stuff you pile on the hot dogs in the bun.

Also Aldi's ice tea is good - they do regular and zero versions.

It's may be too late this year (unless you order now and do overnight shipping) but for your future American party planning needs, check out https://wop-shop.ch/ for decorations (plates, flags, hats, etc.) and https://afoodave.ch/ for snacks and foods

Re: BBQ sites around Luzern (and american-like hotdogs)

Thanks Susie-Q for the great recipes, food suggestions, and music. I hadn't even thought about music! I will make that cake for sure now because it looks delicious. I am debating on whether to make mac and cheese in advance because I'm not sure how well it will reheat on a grill or stay hot in a pack.

And thanks also Meade_Fleecestealer and Tar_Vol. Hopefully I can find some buns today and amazingly, I had the foresight to order some american decor and food fromafoodave.ch a while ago in case I did end up doing this party. I love afoodave.ch but wish they had more things in stock on a regular basis.

Most local grill pplaces cannot be reserved, my experience has been that swiss people are generally flexible about sharing the grill facilities. If you want a reserved grill place/hut there are also quite a few forest huts around, just I have found no centralised listings. Here is a link to one in Luzern that looks great but also costs SFR. 300!

It's a perceived 150 years since I had a hot-dog in the States

You could try these from Migros and check out, if they're American enough?

Re: BBQ sites around Luzern (and american-like hotdogs)

Hey thanks everybody! Now I have food and music covered and some good ideas of where to go! I think the Gütschhütte might actually have BBQs near by that could be used without purchase. I had forgotten about those and I can get to them relatively easy! (although still a bit of a walk I guess and could be taken). I will also try to scout out one of the fireplaces from that map tomorrow.

Based on the map in that link, does that mean the park at the music school and the park next to the heckenlabyrinth doesn't allow us to bring a grill?

Re: BBQ sites around Luzern (and american-like hotdogs)

How about sending one of your guests to each bbq spot early to find one free and then relocate everything to there? From grilling things I second KiwiSteve in that most people will share without any hassle, great way to strike up a conversation as well.

Don't forget to take an appropriate pan and water to boil the hotdogs.
It's likely to get discoloured with the bbq.

I boil them, that way I don't have to cut them and the neighbours don't complain about the smoke...
